Book Description

1 May 1994 Tomorrow, When the War Began
When Ellie and her friends go camping, they have no idea they're leaving their old lives behind forever. Despite a less-than-tragic food shortage and a secret crush or two, everything goes as planned. But a week later, they return home to find their houses empty and their pets starving. Something has gone wrong--horribly wrong. Before long, they realize the country has been invaded, and the entire town has been captured--including their families and all their friends. Ellie and the other survivors face an impossible decision: They can flee for the mountains or surrender. Or they can fight.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book everyone should read 10 Sep 2003
Format:Paperback
This book is so thought-provoking. I read it in my early teens and I have continued to go back to it and read it again and again. Sent to me by my aunt in australia, as many of my books were, it begs the question why many of these great books i cannot find in britain. I really love this book. It's great. I don't read traditional books, don't enjoy poetry etc. But this, is just amazing.

This is the first in an ongoing series of books about how a group of Australian teenagers cope when their country is unexpectedly invaded by an unknown country. They have to survive by their wits alone in a land suddenly alien to them; the book is about how they cope with the loss of friends, family and their entire world - and how they start to fight back. It its the first in an ongoing series, of which only the first three have currently been published in this country (Don't believe anyone that tries to tell you its just a trilogy!). In Australia, they're up to 6, with a seventh and final one on its way this November. The three available here are:
Tommorrow When The War Began
The Dead of the Night
The Killing Frost (originally published as The Third Day, The Frost)
but the series continues with:
Darkness, Be My Friend
Burning for Revenge
The Night is For Hunting
I was sent the first by a friend in Australia, and loved it so much that when I was over there visiting, had to buy up all the rest. So - buy it, but be warned - you'd better cultivate those Australian friends, since the three that you can get over here just won't be enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book, the best series, the best author 15 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is the start of something that I think every Australian and others too should read. This really makes you think about what it would be like to hide from a war in your country. About how hard it would be, how many problems you would encounter. This is the best book I have ever read. The moral is very important Keep the peace and life will be alright, make war and you face a hard time. Ellie is a very developed character who writes in the first person. The ending of the last book is sad and you realise that you have finished the series. This is a great book

5.0 out of 5 stars FANSTASTIC!!!! 3 Feb 2002
Format:Paperback
This has to be just about my favourite book, by my favourite author. It follows Ellie and her friends through a time of tense, thrilling and unexpected plot twists. You really feel as though you have gone through the events in the book with the characters. I am now reading the second book, The Dead of The Night which, doesn't fail my expectations at all. In this book six become five and yet more unexpected things happen.
I would strongly reccommend this series to anyone, as I would John Marsden's other titles, of which there are over thirty.
Well worth reading for an entire weekend straight.

I have never been so affected by a series of books before. Usually i read fantasy books, and in fact i chose the book because of the misleading description on the back about teenagers going to hell. But it was the best mistake i ever made. I have read the whole series 3 times, and am in the process of reading them a fourth time.
While the book starts off in the lives of a normal teenage girl, it doesnt take long for the harsh and relentless shocks of Ellie's life to come into play. As the series goes on, you will not be able to believe the things they have to cope with. It got to a point where my eyes were red from crying, and i felt that Ellie was either ME, or my best friend.
This first book in the series has some great moments (e.g. the bulldozer, and the bridge) but also a very realistic romantic undertone.
One of the best things about this book is how easily i could relate each character to one person in my group of friends. They fitted perfectly. Of course this made any death hit me even harder, and every fight felt real.
If you like relentless excitement, mixed with relentless grief, fear and love. You will love this book. But if you also love humour, you wont be left dry. There is one point, in the third book, when the group is cornered by soldiers, and as they are lined up Kevin farts. I havent laughed so hard at a book in my life. It brightened a very dark moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books 8 Jan 2004
By Nadine
Format:Paperback
This is a fantastic series of books. Initially written for young adults i stumbled across this series in my 20s and found the books to be among the most engrossing I had ever read. The characters are well explored with various complex personalities. I laughed and cried. John Marsden takes a very interesting idea (war breaking out in Australia while a group of teenagers are on a camping trip) and writes it incredibly well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tomorrow when the War began series 13 May 2003
By hanzi b
Format:Paperback
This series was excellent! it was really easy to believe everything that happened and imagine you were part of the group of teenagers.
It took me quite a while to read the series (what with there being 7 books - also the fact that i borrowed them from the school library and someone had the 5th book for over a month!) but each time i restarted reading them i got into the story very quickly!
i would recommend everyone to read the 7 books, although there are some descriptive scenes of death which are a bit gross but obviously a part of war.
john marsden is the best!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars worth a read
I was drawn to this novel having seen the film upon which it is based. The writing style and content is aimed at a 'teen' readership, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
