A Law Unto Itself!, 20 Mar 2004
Whichever way you look at it, this is a very entertaining DVD. I had only read about this story beforehand and it was very intriguing to finally see it. To fans of the show this will hit the mark anyway. However it will also appeal to any seventies TV nostalgic. The story concerns the emergence of a new "Tomorrow Person", Mike, who hails from a run-down London estate. This heralds some class tension with his new colleagues. Mike tries to help an old man who is being harassed by some thugs working for a corrupt peer, Lord Dunning. The police seem less than interested in Lord Dunning's activities and there are doubts about whether Mike will use his powers for good or ill. The story is quite an engaging one. There is a running theme of "one law for the rich, another for the poor" that provides a refreshing social dimension to the show. The police are seen as establishment pawns in a fashion quite surprising for a children's science fiction show of the time. These elements alone make the story well-worth seeing. Unfortunately, and not untypically for this programme, there is some very heavy-handed humour. This is mainly at the expense of the inept Inspector Burke, and the message could have been delivered much more subtly. However even this juvenile humour may appeal in a cheesy way. Some of the humour does work well when handled more naturally. The character of the thug Two Tone is both very menacing but also stylishly amusing. The viewer will be struck by some cheap production and indifferent acting that can provoke a smile for the wrong reasons. However there are some very good performances, cheiefly by John Hollis as Two Tone and Mike Holloway as Mike. The DVD has the advantage of a very entertaining commentary by Nicholas Young, Peter Vaughan-Clarke and Mike Holloway. The trio clearly enjoy their task and put a lot of humour and insight into it. The other extras are quite sound. This is a product that is good value, and worth investigating.
