Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The love-hate relationship between politics and the media is a fitting 90's theme for a James Bond plot, and Raymond Benson's novelisation of Roger Spottiswoode's film Tomorrow Never Dies embraces it fully with wit, irony and excitement.

As in the film, the plot is excellent. Immensely powerful media mogul Elliot Carver takes his obsession with World domination beyond "delivering tomorrow's news today" to more sinister places--not least playing off the Chinese and British in a series of military exchanges. James Bond crosses paths with an opposite and equally impressive agent of the Peoples Republic of China, Wai Lin, in Hamburg on Carver's trail, before the plot moves onto Saigon and the South China Sea. The interesting and exotic locations will be relished by Bond aficionados. Unlike the film, the novel relies on the strength of the characters of Wai Lin and Carver, rather than the slightly over-exuberant and brash action-packed scenes and froth, and it provides us with the opportunity to delve into the background of these impressive and well-rounded figures.

Even if you arrive at Tomorrow Never Dies after seeing the film, you are likely to get much more out of the printed adventure. --JulianBroster

Better than the film! 30 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I don't normally read "books of the film" but after reading Benson's other two original Bond novels ("Zero Minus Ten" and "The Facts of Death") I decided to give this a try. I did not care much for the film. Benson, however, must have added his own bits (unless they were dropped from the final film) which made the book much more entertaining than the movie. The characters were more fleshed out and the plot made more sense. Not as top-notch as Benson's two original books, but still a surisingly good read. Well done!

As Raymond Benson's first Bond movie novelisation this is an entertaining, but workmanlike, read. This is one of the few movie books that does not simply ape the movie, as it is based on a version of the script that was not used, and contains many interesing sequences and sub plots that never made it to the screen. The area where the book fails is mainly in the action sequences, which are too vaguely described and never really come together. This is made up for somewhat in the excellent dialogue and a genuine effort on the part of the author to flesh out the characters.
On the whole, I would say this book is inferior to the novels of GoldenEye and The World is not Enough, but would reccomend it over the book of Die Another Day.
