Simply brilliant! 26 Jan 2003
Format:Hardcover
If you have been captured by the mesmeric charm that is Alan Cumming on screen then you will not be able to resist his first novel, Tommy's Tale. All the charisma of the loveable Scot has been passed to the central character Tommy. A twenty-nine year old Londoner who battles with the dreaded C word - Commitment! Through various London night-spots, New York's high life and the occasional disabled loo, we are taken on an exciting ride to see if Tommy can leave his self-indulgent lifestyle behind, and commit himself to his boyfriend Charlie and his adorable eight-year-old son Finn.

It took me less than twenty-four hours to read this book. From the moment it arrived I couldn't put it down. Each character is beautifully presented and by the end of this book I just wanted to give each one of them a hug. This captivating heart felt novel is one not to be missed.

Alan declared that this isn't an autobiography, but that he just used his experience to write this enthralling novel. It gives us an eye opening view in to the mind of an incredibly talented enchanting actor and soon to be best selling author.

I loved Alan Cumming in The High Life and when I found out about the book I decided it would be equally funny. Luckily it was a good choice. I found myself laughing a few times despite the funny looks I got on the bus.

Tommy's tale tells us of a bisexual man approaching 30 and evaluating his life. It tells of the love he has for his maybe boyfriend Charlie and Charlie's son Finn. Tommy would also like to be a Dad himself. Luckily he has two briliant friends in Sadie and Bobby that are there to help. Some of the passages are written so beautifully in fairytale style and work well in the book.

There are sex and drug references in the book but I never got the impression they were there for the sake of it. They are part of Tommy's life and the story flows well. I had it finished in a day and a half. I found myself wanting to know what happened next which is a good sign that the writer has done enough to make you care about the characters.

.....but perhaps watch out for those reading over your shoulder. The content of this cracking novel is both extreme and extremely funny. If you have seen Cummings interviewed you will understand that the man is extremely witty and also somewhat complicated.
Well so is this book - not least because much of it must be autobiographical. The charm of the man shines through - but be warned. It's a real romp through the world of parties, drugs and sex - and I loved every page of it.
