At last we're starting to see Ken Russell's films emerge onto the blu-ray format, and this is a great one to start with.

'Tommy' is definitely the highlight of Russell's post-Mahler output and the marriage between his superb screenplay, razor-sharp editing and stunning sequences of post-psychadelic imagery with Pete Townsend's improved and expanded (for the movie) classic rock score was a major box-office and artistic success.

Fans will be very familiar with the 'deaf, dumb and blind kid' who 'sure played a mean pinball' narrative and the accompanying critique of false religions and the cult of self - probably more relevant and resonant today than it was in the 1970s - so I won't retread the storyline here.

But what fans of the Who and of Ken Russell will not be familiar with is the fantastic clarity of the print courtesy of the blu-ray format, which makes re-veiwing the film a real visual treat! Colours are rich and vibrant, the sharpness is evident everywhere, there is very little grain at all, and the film looks brand new. The sound is superb too, with two 5.1 options.

All the extras from the 2-disc deluxe dvd have been imported, including the Ken Russell commentary and interview, so this really is worth the upgrade from your dvd to the blu-ray.

Let's hope we'll see many more Russell titles get released on this format and to this quality standard.

Excellent!

This Blu-ray release is a disaster. The colors has been altered. It's like there is a layer of blue/gray fog between the viewer and the picture. Still, the worst is the picture that has been violently cut up and down to create a widescreen ratio. The whole thing was shot in 1.66, or there about, (14:9) in 1974. The DVD release is true(r) to the original format. Choose that one - not this freaky B-r release.

Quadrophenia - Brilliant film, brilliant soundtrack, what can I say? Watch it again and again.
Tommy - An altogether darker film, but with a tremendous soundtrack. Pete Townshend was a genius.
