Book Description

A gripping thriller from a hot new writer - Doug Johnstone was featured as one of Scotland's finest new talents in the Sunday Herald, January 2006

Product Description

Your best mate just fell off a cliff in mysterious circumstances and you were the last person to see him alive. What do you do? Well, if you’re David Lindsay from Arbroath, you get the hell out of there and don’t return. Not for at least fifteen years. Until Nicola Cruickshank - yes, that Nicola, the girl you always fancied but never had the guts to approach - gets in touch and asks - no, demands - that you go back for a school reunion. To the place where it happened. The place you’ve been running from for fifteen years. Of course you go. Not to belatedly lay your mate to rest, but because you still fancy Nicola. The thing is, if you are David Lindsay, then returning to Arbroath isn’t going to lay any ghosts to rest. And when someone else takes a dive off the cliffs - an act the locals have taken to calling ‘tombstoning’ - while David’s there, he has a choice: run away again, or finally find out why people keep dying around him . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars Witty dialogue, great characters, 13 Aug 2006

I really enjoyed this book - the story moves along at a great pace and I read it in two long sittings. I'd heard Christopher Brookmyre comparisons, and I can see where that's coming from because there's the same dry humour and the same witty, realistic dialogue. The plot doesn't have any mad Brookmyre-style twists, but that just gives the characters more room to develop. Nicola is one of the best-realised fictional women I've come across, and it's nice to see the heroine getting equal page time rather than just dripping about in the background!

4.0 out of 5 stars Tombstoning review, 13 Aug 2006

A friend told me about this book and author, so I thought I'd give it a go...I'd pre-ordered it from Amazon ages ago, and forgotten all about it....When I received it, I read it within 2 days....what a great read and a great first novel....in terms of plot there were no major surprises or twists at the end, but that didn't spoil the enjoyment of getting sucked into the lives of great characters very well written....I think we all know a Nicola or a David and even a Mike unfortunately!! A really enjoyable read...looking forward to reading what Doug Johnstone produces next....

1.0 out of 5 stars Sank Like A Stone, 3 Nov 2008

It is some time since I have read a book as bad as this and how Christopher Brookmyre can endorse it is beyond me.
The storyline is weak and the ending is so predictable.Of course the author has to pad it out with a plethora of foul language,a touch of violence and some outdoor sex.
Be warned,this book is dire!!
