The original Tomb Raider was the first game I ever played and one of my favourite games of all time. So when I heard that Crystal Dynamics were working on a new Tomb Raider game, I couldn't wait to play it. The game is a reboot which takes the series in a completely new direction and I couldn't be happier with the end result. Crystal Dynamics have done a remarkable job, taking inspiration from the fantastic Uncharted games and building on them to create the best Tomb Raider game in a long time. This Definitive Edition on PS4 is THE version to own and offers just a glimpse of what we can expect in the next instalment.

The story begins with a small group of survivors who are shipwrecked on a mysterious Island after their ship, the Endurance, is torn apart in a violent storm. Unfortunately, being shipwrecked is the least of their worries as the island is home to a group of savage, cold-blooded killers who don't take kindly to outsiders. Lara and the other survivors must go to extreme lengths to stay alive and discover the truth about the Island before it's too late. As the story unfolds, we see Lara transform from an inexperienced, vulnerable girl into a brave and resourceful young woman. It's a gripping, well written tale of survival and like a good book you can't put down, I couldn't stop playing.

The main campaign is a decent length, taking me well over twenty hours to complete on Hard mode. Although I did take my time, finding as many collectables in each area before moving on to the next. I recommend finding the hidden diaries as you progress through the game as they explain the history of the Island and it's inhabitants and flesh out some of the supporting characters who are otherwise a little underdeveloped.

I bought this game last year on PC and never really got into it; performance issues persisted and I just gave up on it.
I wasn't sure on buying this, I thought it would just be a waste and be the same thing.
I was massively wrong! The game is absolutely stunning. Visually it is the best looking PS4 game currently out there.
It utilises the controller is really unique ways which really surprised me. For instance, as Lara is crawling through a gave littered with bones on the ground, you can hear a crunch sound from the speaker as she steps. Another nifty thing is how the game uses the Dualshock 4's light bar on the back. If you're in a cave with a torch, the light bar flickers red/yellow/orange! When you fire a gun it flashes white! Really, really unique and never expected it. I find it really added to the immersivenes especially if playing in a dark room (recommend it).

The game also uses voice control so you can either use the earbud+mic that comes with every PS4 or you can use the PS4 camera or your own headset. Voice recognition is pretty good however since I was playing in a noisey environment I had to turn it off due to it thinking I said "pause" and it would randomly pause the game. In a quiet room it would be useful, you can navigate most menus with it (e.g. "show map", "pause", "resume", "show documents", "show skills".).
If Lara is grabbed you can also use the DS4's motion controls and shake the controller side to side for her to struggle free.
The touchpad can also be used to navigate the map. Holding it down opens the map which is useful to know if voice control is turned off.

The storyline is pretty good, well within what you'd expect for a TR game.

I missed this on last gen so I thought I would try it out, having nothing else to play at the moment.
The game looks amazing and the controls are perfect, the story sucks you in and makes you care about the outcome. If you never played this game I can not recommend it high enough and at this price it's a bargain.

Tomb Raider is a real roller coaster ride right from the start. The cut scenes are incredibly detailed and merge into the game play seamlessly, and in-game the graphics are very realistic. It's very intense and dramatic, as soon as play starts you feel Lara's pain as she battles to save herself and her comrades from impending doom. The story keeps you gripped through out every level and it certainly has many WOW moments, like when climbing the communications tower, you may feel vertigo.

The combat is extremely frantic and high octane and sometimes insanely so, but once you've mastered your weaponry and combat killing skills the hostiles are easy to dispatch and out smart. There are levels when it's all bullets and arrows blazing and if you decide there are levels when you can sit back and satisfyingly take out each hostile in stealth mode. With incredible graphics and slick intense game play, and full use of the DualShock 4 controller, Tomb Raider Definitive Edition is the perfect title to showcase what your PS4 can do. Highly recommended.

I did not play Tomb Raider on PS3, there were a lot of games about at that time which I preferred to play (The Last of Us and GTAV being among them) so when this released on PS4 I snapped a copy up as I was pretty dry on the game front (as I imagine others are!). I won't review it as a full game but as a PS4 re-release game, if you want to know what the game is like there are some great reviews on the PS3 version.

I was pleased with it from the get-go. Immediately I heard echoing sounds and clicks coming from the DS4 speaker (A feature I did not realise it had!) this gave it a little extra something and as you play journal notes and passages are read to you through the DS4. I did also notice that when firing at an enemy a disgusting splash of blood and matter can be heard through the DS4 to confirm your target is one with the weeds. There is also a very satisfying reload noise heard when ever you do so in game. A very nice touch!

The game is really really smooth and looks outstanding. Tomb Raider plays in full and glorious 1080p and at times 60fps (with a minimum of 30fps at all times!! It really makes a difference and its such a satisfying thing that you just want to keep on playing past the end! The graphics are incredible and the Island of Yamatai is so gruesomely beautiful that you feel sick on some levels its so picture perfect (Shantytown). Every detail of the game is beautiful and you really do feel emersed in this world. Guards torches cut through forest mist perfectly, heat waves can be seen hovering above torches and campfires, Lara's hair blows in the wind as do flags and any textiles, smoke changes direction with the wind, water flows over rocks and looks (for the most part) good enough to drink. The game really is eerily beautiful and flawless to boot!
