The Marvel series Tomb of Dracula has quite a following; in fact, it's one of my favorites in 40+ years of reading all genres of comics. Even still, I'm somewhat surprised at just how much attention has been paid to it over the last several years. There's been a stream of Essentials, Omnibuses, and color trades, providing readers with a number of options in format and price. It speaks to just how well this series holds up, and it's a testament to the skills of all creators involved. I purchased all four Essential volumes due to the low cost, as well as how the black and white format opened up Gene Colan's beautiful art to a whole new level of scrutiny, but after acquiring a free copy of the first color trade paperback, I'll be grabbing these editions as well.
TOMB OF DRACULA VOLUME 1 collects the first twelve issues of the series by writers Gerry Conway, Archie Goodwin, Gardner Fox, and Marv Wolfman, which established Bram Stoker's classic Count Dracula as a villain in the modern Marvel Univesre. It's nice to see that Marvel has put this number of issues in a trade for this price, as their collected editions have been skyrocketing in cost over the last ten years while the page counts continue to drop. It certainly emphasizes how much of a deal this book is. While Marvel has inexplicably scuttled the rich history of this version of the Count with the recent The Death of Dracula, I think it's great that there is so much love for what was done by Wolfman, Colan, et al. back in the '70s. I can't claim that the writing is perfect, as the dialogue can get hilariously excessive and melodramatic, and some of the situations the characters find themselves in are pretty absurd... yes, even in a vampire comic. Still, the stories are very fast-paced, with the back-and-forth struggle between Count Dracula and his foes (Frank Drake, Quincy Harker, Rachel Van Helsing, Taj, and Blade) keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. Colan's atmospheric art has always transcended that of the standard superhero crowd, and I feel that it has never been better than on this series. Hopefully, Marvel will keep these books in print so that others can get in on a good thing.
