4.0 out of 5 stars Superb but touchscreen a bit touchy, 18 Oct 2008
    Apologies for a long one.

I can't comment on J.E.Preston's problems but my brief experience after my first long-ish drive have been very good.
It took me there and , after telling it to avoid M5 near Bristol on the way back, brought me home flawlessly.

Map Errors? In my limited driving I found one or two traffic-light controlled junctions were not indicated (in Gloucester) but if you casually look at the on-screen distance-before-next-turn value then it's no problem. The need to use my 23 working brain cells didn't stress me too much! And is this worse or better than any other makes? I can't imagine it possible to keep maps 100% up to date, especially with daft Councils fiddling with minor/village roads. See MapShare below...

I found the TomTom ONE XL easy to use and (after memorising what the on-screen things mean) was perfectly clear.
The screen/backlighting was very good. Voice quality and auto volume control was impressive.
All aspects are better than my last one and better in many ways than the wife's in-car one.

MAPSHARE: The shared Map Corrections feedback feature is an excellent idea assuming it is used properly. No doubt there are many minor map glitches and being able to feed it back for other users is excellent. I hope others use it and provide feedback for others (inlcuding me) to share!! So, don't moan, do a 'Correct a Map Error' instead :-)

My ONLY niggle is the screen press-to-next-press time is too quick and on several occasions , when going over a bump, I inadvertently pressed twice/thrice and went 'too deep' into a menu, then had to get back and have another go. This is NOT GOOD when driving.
This really SHOULD be user-adjustable like the double-click speed is on PC Mouse drivers.

If you don't know what I'm on about, I'll try and explain.
Normally, you press the screen and then release i.e. a brief touch (or dab) and up pops whatever e.g. 'Main Menu 1 of 3'.
Then you choose your option and you do another brief dab with your digit. And so on until you find what you want - PERFECTLY FINE on the kitchen table.
HOWEVER, in the Real World, you have the unit on a slightly wobbly stalk and you are driving down a bumpy old road (e.g. the M5). You quickly glance to the TomTom and press the screen, and darn it you go over a bump, your finger twitches and the TomTom thinks you've pressed three times. I ended up in 'Avoid Roadblock' several times!! And so you have to do 'Done' / 'Back' your way back to the start and have another go.
This is the LAST THING you want when you are driving.
If the 'buttons' on the next menu/screen were disabled for, say, a quarter of a second between presses it would reduce this pain. Or make it adjustable you clever TOMTOM firmware writers.

On only one occasion (in 6 hours) did my sucker fall off the windscreen - maybe an extra cm in diam would help as the unit is quite heavy. Or maybe I didn't press it on properly, so who knows, maybe operator error. Yes, I did make sure all was clean before pressing it on.

    2 WIBNIs:-
1.Switch between day and night screen mode automatically.....
    2. Warn of speed cameras at some distance BEFORE you see them - as opposed to beeping as you pass them - but as I always keep to the speed limit I wasn't too bothered <smug yawn>.

    Summary.
For 'performance' in my brief 6 hours of driving and for the MapUpdate facility I would give it 5 out of 5. I was impressed enough to recommend it.
But I shall knock off one for a slightly too fast screen-button response time (as in ooops-I-went-over-a-bump and pressed it 3 times). It is a pain - are all SatNavs like it?
An inter-dab delay should be included and I strongly believe TomTom should have a look at that. It would improve safety as you would spend less time dabbing and more time paying attention to the road. I tried their on-line 'support' to ask about it, but their website has gone potty.

4.0 out of 5 stars TomTom One XL, 19 Oct 2008
By E. Palethorpe (Leicester, UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I resently bought the TomTom One XL with the extras (case, traffic & european maps) This is the first sat nav ive owned and so far I cant fault it.
I have read a number of reviews of problems with the XL's window mount being difficult to put the sat nav on and off, but the simple solution I found right away was to turn the mount head 90degrees one way, slide your sat nav on, then straighten back upright.

Am very glad to have gotten the case with mine as is something I would have had to buy and am always using it to store in.

The traffic extra I didnt realise that you have to pay a subscription fee to get this. So even though I have the cable I wont be using it as Im not going to be paying £30 a year for traffic updates or £35 a year for traffic and speed cameras. If I had realised this I wouldnt have bother with that so much.

The European Maps will be good but I cant see me using them much at all.

The thing that confused me the most when shopping for a sat nav was that TomTom seem to have changed the One XL from a yellow box to an blue box. One is called One XL GB and the other One XL Classic - basically the same thing but the 'Classic' is the new name and box. Had to go into a shop to find out I had been looking at the same thing just old and new packaging as couldnt find the information anywhere!

Only other thing is I wish that when you add a favorite address you could put the name of the place of that address in, and share that information as part of map-share. For eg - two of my local cinemas arent listed and when Ive put in the postcodes, although it finds the place I cant then add 'Odeon'. And i noticed that it still has listed postoffices that are no longer open (as part of all the smaller ones getting closed). These sort of updates would be very usefull to share too.

All in all great sat nav, and cant wait to use on a long journey.

3.0 out of 5 stars TomTom foolery., 14 Oct 2008

    (REAL NAME)
TomTom ONE XL + Case + Traffic + European Maps
Purchased this item this week and found it easy enough to set-up and update through the provided DVD.

The worst fault is that the mapping and safety camera data is hopelessly out of date (I borrowed a friends TomTom the other week and that was the same but I thought that a newer version would at least be up to date).

It has failed to recognise the significant junction changes at the M58/M57 intersection which were completed some years ago. It has not recognised local safety cameras which have been there for in excess of 10 years. It warns of a '50' safety camera when the limit there is '60' - and that speed is shown on the information bar. Tried to send me up a one-way street which has been there for years and tries to take me along a narrow 'no-through road' lane and round in a circle when my destination is 1/2 mile on a straight road in exactly the opposite direction. What is going on here ?

May seem minor niggles, but it does not inspire confidence when you are testing it in your own backyard and find these faults and idiosyncracies.

Absolutely chock-full of features, but I do wonder if all Sat-Nav systems are so out of date. I have used the MapShare update facility as well - which incidentally, my neighbour used to correct the incorrect local lane issue some months ago - apparently without effect.

Overall, a handy piece of kit if you have no option but to let it have it's head in an unkown area AND I do like the facility of showing your speed and the limit for that road as you drive along even though it gets that wrong on occasions.

By-the-way, the screen suction kit and in-car charging lead are included in the box even though they are not shown on the piccies. A spare set is however useful if you have another car.

I just wish that TomTom had got their act together on updates when it would be a superb piece of kit.
