Better than a map on the lap or passenger argument, 28 Nov 2005
This review is from: TomTom One UK GPS Navigation System With UK Mapping (Electronics)
I was (and still am after one weekend) sceptical of Sat-Nav systems, however after driving over 400 miles this weekend with the Tom Tom ONE guiding me I'm starting to change my mind. The first trip I took with it was a problem, however not the fault of the Tom Tom ONE, the receptionist at the company I was visiting had giving me the post code of their postal contact point not the office post code. Once I'd established that I was a little happier, and continued on to my next destination. Central London a test for most in car systems of all types, (the Tom Tom ONE also offers to find you a route avoiding toll charges which is great for skipping around the congestion charge zone). However I had two problems with the Tom Tom in London, firstly it wanted me to turn right at a left turn only junction. However, it did quickly recalculate my route shortly after turning left with only one "turn around when you can prompt", that didn't involve me trying to turn around in busy traffic. The second problem was following a diversion due to roadworks and a closed road, but again after ignoring the first two route adjustment directions the Tom Tom recalculated the route and I was soon on my way again with no further problems. I also got a free trial period of Tom Tom Plus with the unit, this allows me to connect via bluetooth to my mobile and receive traffic updates, you can then get the Tom Tom ONE to recalculate your route to minimise delays (for once I only spend 10-15 minutes sat stationary in traffic getting into and out of London, compare to the normal extra hour it seems to take some days). Tom Tom Plus also gives you access to a download of static safety camera locations and a reminder chime when you're approaching one and a display of the speed limit set at the camera location and distance to the camera. In summary this unit is as advertised, easily installed, easy to use, updates can be applied either through your PC and supplied USB cable or via a bluetooth enable mobile. Certainly a worthwhile replacement for the dogeared road atlas stuffed down the back of the passenger seat.

TomTom One - Best budget satnav yet?, 7 Sep 2006
This review is from: TomTom One UK GPS Navigation System With UK Mapping (Electronics)
Having waited and waited, read hundreds of reviews, etc. I finally decided to take the plunge and purchase a satnav for my son who has recently learnt to drive. I didn't want to spend a fortune, as he does not drive for a living (but is taking his new car off to university with him). The reviews seemed to indicate that this new model was good. So, sent off my £199. Unit arrived next day. Ripped open the box, quick glance at instructions and switched on and had a play. Worked straight out of the box. Set some preferences, entered a few destinations and watched the demo of the routes. All very nice. A smallish unit which has a good colour touch screen. I then fitted in the car via the included screen mount (no problems, stays put nicely). Power supply comes from cigarette lighter socket via the included lead. Not intrusive. I tried a few journeys, first locally, then further afield. I have to say that this little device is a wonderful aid. I say aid, because if you blindly follow ALL its instructions you could (will), sooner or later, end up down a farmers track (I'm sure you've heard the stories on the news). Well I can confirm that it attempted to send me down a road that has now been made into a dead end, and it does not know my local town has a one way system (has had for last two years). So, the maps are not bang up to date, but that is not the fault of TomTom, or the One unit. All makes and prices suffer this problem, as they all purchase their map info from the same one or two providers. Anyway, the beauty of this unit is if you ignore a dodgy instruction and keep driving, it will (without touching anything) recalculate the route and you carry on, all is well!
It's found all the destinations inputted so far. So, no complaints. It's too early to comment on reliability as we've only had it a week, but so far it does everything it says on the box. I've hooked it up to my PC (via the supplied USB lead) and connected to the TomTom web site. It automatically checks the unit and downloads any (software) updates. I also purchased the speed (sorry safety) camera POI (points of interests) while I was there. I notice you can purchase different voices, POI data, etc.
So in conclusion, if you are thinking of getting a satnav - BUY THIS NEW MODEL! The TomTom software is probably the best out there. You will not be disappointed. For £200 it raises the bar. Don't buy one of the older models (of any make) that were £450 and now on offer at £250 (it's already out of date!). Don't spend £500 on one either (not to start with anyway), they all do basically the same job. And the downside of this 'lower end' model? Maybe a couple - smallish screen, so if you have sausage like fingers, you may have trouble inputting post codes, etc, - it can sometimes take a minute or so to lock on to the satellites after switch on, but normally locked on by the time you have inputted destination info into it (I see there is a software update imminent for this....so just the fat fingers then).

Nearly Perfect But Beware!, 17 July 2006
This review is from: TomTom One UK GPS Navigation System With UK Mapping (Electronics)
The Tom Tom One does everything it says on the packet. It extraordinarily good, outperforming my expectations. It is simple to set up and is very fast in its operations. There are minor quirks but you soon get used to them and the touch screen control is a literally a little "touchy" - I would not recommend using it while in motion 'cos you will make errors.
The BEWARE in my review comes from the security problem.
Thieves find this product irresistible.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES LEAVE ANY EVIDENCE OF THE DEVICE VISABLE in an unattended vehicle. We had removed our device from our Landrover but since we were parked outside our own garage we had left the empty windscreen mounting kit in place, 10 minuets later the window had been smashed, the vehicle ransacked, but only the mounting kit had been taken!!
This hasn't put us off the excellent Tom Tom, but we are now looking for a convenient storage bag to hold all the bits.
