The tom tom arrived quickly so I connected it to the PC. After installing tom tom home and running it, I was told an updated map exists - click here to download it. So i did. After a few hours the map had downloaded but tom tom home was unable to install it, Someting about TOC mismatch?? Tom tom home then offered to update the tom tom software and GPS which it did. The tom tom satnav was then reset and it displayed the message 'no map data' and that was it. Instead of updating the satnav, tom tom home had trashed it. I then went to the tom tom website for help and there it says before you do any updates with tom tom home, take a backup. Trouble was, tom tom home didn't offer that as an option the first time it started up and now it was too late. Minus two stars for that.

So the moral of the story is. The first time you use tom tom home, DONT update to the latest anything. Say NO NO NO. You will eventually get to the main menu screen and then you can choose BACKUP. After which, update at will. Other than that, it seems to be a pretty good satnav (I did evetually get the satnav untrashed).

UPDATE:
I noticed that the supplied safety camera data was a bit out of date and although the satnav came with safety camera data installed, there wasn't a subscription so it wasn't being updated. I purchased the TomTom safety camera service and downloaded the latest update. To my surprise the datatbase still had the out of date data (safety cameras that had been in place for roadworks but had been removed over 6 months ago). I queried this with TomTom support. Their website says the safety camera service gives you a weekly update of accurate and up to date safety camera data, but their support response was that they cannot guarantee the accuracy of the data nor can they tell if it contains out of date data or not. So I would say, don't bother with the TomTom safety camera service.

I agree with a previous reviewer regarding the latest map guarantee. I DID do a backup before I tried to install the latest map version. After, literally, hours of downlaod and install I got the message "no maps found!". I ran the restore and, still, no maps found. The weird thing is, the TomTom Home desktop software shows the maps as present on the device. Still trying to resolve the problem with software support. If you do buy it, don't run map guarantee?

BOUGHT THIS ITEM AS A PRESANT FOR MY PARTNER. SHE LOVES IT. SHE ALWAYS SAID SHE DID NOT NEED ONE BUT AFTER USING THIS TOMTOM, HER ATTITUDE HAS CHANGED. ITS EASY TO USE , GREAT USEFUL FUNCTIONS. SHE NOW TAKES IT EVERYWHERE.
