4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but space to improve..., 19 Jan 2005
By Mo "f1mo" (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This was a difficult product to mark, I wish I could give 5/5, but I have found there are several places where this software can improve. I also have the Navman on my Ipaq therefore comparisons were made.
Let's start off with the basics. There are many features with this software that are superb. The large screen icons are great for touch-screen actions without the need for stylus. The menus are very easy to understand and follow. Finding an address I found to be a little long winded then the Navman, also I was surprised to see that all the London were not present. The POI functions are superb and have the upper hand here over the Navman. There are lots of POI search, from businesses to tourist attractions.
The night time function is also well thought of, and seems to be clearer at night time driving. Voice instructions are superb and the GPS signal is also faster and more accurate. The re-routing I found to be better by being accurate and fast.
The support from TomTom is also superb, I had a query to see whether I was able to use my existing Navman GPS, the techies got back and solved the problem, I was able to use the GPS. There is also an alternative route selector option, which is great as the navigation provides an alternative. Also TomTom offer traffic and accident service which requires subscriptions, but this is an awesome service and one that no other navigation companies offer for your PDA.
The gripes:
When the map is scrolling there are no road names displayed except for the road you are on. Navman score over TomTom here. I personally like to know where I am, by having road names displayed, you can track yourself. The address input is also very long-winded and does not have enough minor roads.

The TomTom navigation is superb, but for the above little gripes it was difficult to give this a perfect score, I just hope the next release improves this.

The perfect solution would be a combined navigation which integrates the best of Navman and TomTom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it, you won't regret it (once it has settled down), 8 Mar 2005
Bought this in December 2004 with an iPAQ 2210 PDA as a bundle. It is brilliant, it was a little fiddly to set up, mainly because I didn't read the instructions properly and the Activesync programme which links the PC with my PDA was not only being a pain in the arse but it was also being blocked by my Norton Antivirus - in the end I disabled the firewall temporarily and have since upgraded to Norton 2005 which has solved it. To start with the system was a little glitchy - this was probably more PDA based than Tomtom, however now things have settled down it is working smoothly and I wouldn't be without it, the voice instructions are very clear and the graphics great. I have't had GPS before and you do have to play with it for a while to get used to it so I would suggest you buy it about a month before you will want to use it "for real". Also make sure you back-up the system onto your PC once everything is loaded incase it does crash on you, (this will be an option on the PC/PDA syncronsiation programme). Ensure you buy a big memory card, preferably 512MB minimum and allow about an hour for the maps to load, alternatively if you are posh like me and your PDA can take CF and SD cards simultaneously, load all the maps on a 256 SD card and lock it and buy a CF card for everything else - that way you should never lose the maps. Bottom line is, Tomtom is so good I have even bought the maps of Western Europe and I don't really know why...
