Advanced Lane Guidance

Drivers often feel stressed at unfamiliar junctions when there are a lot of lanes to choose from. Advanced lane guidance provides extra clarity to drivers in these circumstances, so they won’t miss a turn or have to make a last-minute lane crossing. It works by giving them a still 3D image on the screen that clearly indicates the lane they need to take. So even at the most complex junctions and in the heaviest traffic, drivers can stay relaxed and in control.

Richer Maps

You are ready to go with the richer maps, covering two million km more roads in 45 European countries with more graphical details. HD Traffic™

It’s often helpful to check the radio, TV and internet for traffic news. But most of these sources only give news on the main highways. And that information won’t make any difference to route calculation on your device. Our leading HD Traffic™ service, however, gives drivers more detailed updates on more of the roads – live on their TomTom device. Users can view detailed incident reports, estimated delay times and alternative route proposals in an instant. The result? Drivers stay calm and in control, with the most accurate journey durations and arrival times.

TomTom HD Traffic gives you the most up-to-date traffic information, and IQ Routes helps you find the fastest route, anytime.

I used to own a Garmin Nuvi 770 - I loved that device because it had world maps, solid GPS, a large screen and most importantly (for the wife!) it was EASY to use. It had bags of features, mp3 player, phone connectivity, pictures, FM transmission for the voice guidance etc - I never used any of it. The traffic service was delivered via FM signal - disaster, not reliable traffic information and I could rarely get a lock on to download the traffic data anyway.

Moving on, I purchased the TomTom because of the screen size and resolution, the much hype'd Live Services and the guidance/navigation. On these points you cannot fault it. The Live services are outstanding, you get the first year free but it is a subscription service. This combined with the IQ routes makes it, IMHO, the best navigation device on the market. Unlike the Garmin, I "trust" this will do its best on the most up to date knowledge whereas as I pointed out this is Garmins weak link.

The unit is very well built, I also have the bean bag stand which is ideal. The screen is really nice brightness and resolution of graphics, I've had no issues reading it. The new menu system is as simple or complex as you like. I still prefer the Garmin method of listing favourites / POI based on distance but its not a big deal. I do like the on device options to modify maps (say if a turn is no longer legal, you can mark it on the device so it doesn't use it in routing) and the speed camera reporting - very cool as things change quite a lot. Despite the graphics, screensize and resolution the unit is very responsive and I've never had a crash/software bug yet.

Following the February update, I can confirm that memory space due to maps is no longer an issue as the SD slot is enabled. You must go via TomTom software however as the TomTom v Microsoft fight means no regular FAT file system here. With the update was a bunch of other things like improved POI handling.

Overall there are other devices with more "features" out there, but I never used them on my old device so they really didn't come into it for me. I would welcome the mapshare option to be available, I think we get much more value from community updates this way. Finally I would say that I think the Garmin maps are slightly more accurate/up to date with a much richer POI database, however on the POI the Live Google/TripAdvisor/Expedia search more than makes up for that.

Slightly Cheesed Off 24 Jan 2012
    By Richard
Great product until you decide to update the maps....there's not enough memory (you get 8GB) to hold all the larger updated map files. The response from tomtom support is to swap maps in and out from my PC, this is what I wanted to avoid by buying this product!

I have been waiting for a TomTom with global mapping for some time, to replace an ageing GO910 which I used widely in Europe and north America. The Live 1005 Global is a significant step forward compared to prior Live models, having 8GB of internal memory, an SD slot for expansion, and pre-installed maps covering Europe, North America, Australia and bits of Asia.

First impressions were very favourable. The latest mounting and connection arrangement is a huge improvement on my prior model. Of course, the much larger screen is also great. The layout of the menus have changed substantially and took a little time to get to grips with. However, after a month of use I have got used to the new format and find it very intuitive. A couple of niggles: the default display for motorway exits is the fixed picture, which I do not like as it does not update as you approach the junction - this is particularly an issue if there is a follow-on manoeuvre and you need to know which lane to be in (it is odd that TomTom use this graphic in a lot of their promotional material as it a poor feature). Fortunately this can be turned off in one of the preference settings. The other niggle is that the "confirm destination" menu covers a lot of screen that sometimes you want to see.

I have been using it for a month or so now, and the navigation has been faultless. The TomTom navigation UI remains the best on the market: it is so much better than any other manufacturer (my personal opinion!) and was the primary reason I went for another TomTom. The GPS fix is quick: I was particularly impressed on returning from the USA to turn the device on at Heathrow and within 30 seconds it found the new location, and prompted to switch to the correct map. The Live traffic works well. There are a number of features I have not yet tried, eg bluetooth connectivity, so cannot comment.

So why does it not get 5 stars? Unfortunately the MyTomTom interface for updates and device management is terrible. It took several calls to TomTom support (the live chat facility worked well) and some software reboots to get it going. I have now updated the maps and other software, but it is a bit random as to whether it works or not each time I connect the device.

One final points, which is quite odd: if I turn the device on near my computer it crashes the cable modem and I have to reboot all my broadband devices. Do not know if this is particular to my modem, but it is unaffected by other radio devices. The Live must have quite an EM footprint.
