5.0 out of 5 stars TomTom number 4 10 Aug 2012
By Sharpy
Verified Purchase
This is the fourth TomTom I have bought. Each time I need a new one I check out the alternatives, but TomTom is always head and shoulders above the competition. The mapping is excellent. Also, they are very quick to reroute in the event of a driving error, after going through a tunnel or if "traffic" detects a problem ahead. It is very easy to update maps, speed cameras, etc over the internet.
I use my GPS when on business and when driving our motorhome in Europe. A few months ago I was driving around the Paris ring road in the evening rush hour and it was raining and going dark. TomTom traffic detected a problem ahead due an accident and diverted me away from the ring road and on to an alternative route north and onwards to Eurotunnel - try doing that with paper maps as a stranger in a strange place!
Having tried out my new TomTom Camper & Caravan unit on several routes recently I have no hesitation in recomending it to other caravan and motorhome drivers. It really does keep you away from potential problems and the preloaded European camp sites are really useful. I find the camp site I need in the "Caravan Club Europe" books, locate it on the TomTom and make it a "favourite"; this makes it easier to find again when needed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good device let down by rubbish software 27 Nov 2012
By Steve
' The TomTom Go Caravan and Camper is, on the face of it, a very good sat nav - reasonably easy to use, good maps and good route planning. However, if you have owned previous devices in the TomTom Go and LIVE series (prior to the 1000 series on which the caravan and camper model is based) you are possibly in for some disappointment followed by frustration and anger at TomTom's utter failure to address your concerns.

For the 1000 series and beyond, TomTom have completely re-written the computer interface software - and to be quite honest, it is rubbish. If you were used to connecting your earlier model to your computer and using "operate my Go" in the "TomTom Home" interface to plan the route on your monitor before saving to the device - forget it. TomTom have removed this function completely! Likewise "Itinerary Planning" - GONE! The nearest you can approach this is to set way points on a route. This feature is difficult to use - especially since you can only do it on the device itself now - and you are restricted to a maximum of three way points on any route. Also - TomTom have ended their relationship with Google and substituted their own internet search program and database - it is absolutely rubbish.

Worst of all, despite a lot of complaints in the company's official forums about these downgrades - and calls to customer services, TomTom have steadfastly ignored all request even for an explanation of *why* these downgrades have happened.

I kept my "TomTom Carvan and Camper" because, at the end of the day, the special features for vehicle size give me a certain peace of mind - but I will no longer recommend TomTom devices to my friends as I have in the past. It is only the specialised features for motor homes and caravans that induce me to give the 1000 series a neutral rating '

1.0 out of 5 stars Go backwards with Tom Tom 13 Dec 2012
I am a 'Long term' Tom Tom owner,I bought this Go Live 1005 Camper Edition to relace a 6 year old 'One New Edition',
which although still working, sometimes leads me in a Motorhome, down roads I really shouldn't be driving down.
VERY dissapointed with the change of Website interface software, MUCH harder to download POI's as they are no longer on the Tom Tom website, they have to be found and entered manually, no longer community shared, as they were before. The very useful 'Itinery Feature' has been deleted, WHY ?? this was very useful when Touring as you could 'tick off' the destinations, without having to Re-program the Sat-Nav. The 'Navigate to' has lost the 'Postcode' box, it is incorporated in the address area AND contains a VERY annoying 'Predictive feature' which tries to 'second guess' your destination, (and nearly always gets it wrong !!) and wastes my time.
Very expensive, to just be able to feel relaxed about driving a large vehicle. Not sure whether the Mapping is based on actual laser road measurements ? (like Google Earth) or just Legal restrictions ? we shall see.
Much prefere my Tom Tom one. Isn't that going backwards ??

2.0 out of 5 stars After Garmin this is a letdown 10 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase
After peer advice to go with Tomtom I purchased the GO Live Camper & Caravan, then found that I could not download POI's
of camp sites that are not on the Tomtom. This it seems must be done one at a time, but confusion reigns over how to do it, I gave up.
and have decided to run my camper with my old Garmin for finding the campsites, and the Tomtom to avoid low bridges and non accessible roads, Hopefully !
After reading several forum sites, I realise I have made a mistake in purchasing this item

4.0 out of 5 stars TomTom's 'Curate's Egg' 2 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase
Bought to replace a 3 year GO740 when we started towing a caravan.

Good Points
- When towing its great as it keeps you out of narrow town streets and other difficult places for a big caravan. Then it is easy to switch to Car only and explore the lanes.
- It is also better than the GO740 for handling multiple way-points on a journey.
- It came pre-loaded with Google, Expedia and Trip advisor (but see later).

Bad Points
- Compared to the GO740 it has a very limited choice of Journey options . it just assumes the fastest with No Option of shortest or most economic, However the one we miss most is WALKING as it so useful when you park in a strange city to be able to Walk back to the car park. This Camper & Caravan version just assumes you want to Drive there. Grrrrr.

- When it failed in rural Spain after only 4 weeks of use I was upset to discover it is totally Internet connectivity dependant. The old GO740 uses 'TomTom HOME' on your PC so you can simply 'Hard' reset the SatNav and reload everything from your laptop - "Simples" This new C&C version is DEAD until you can connect to 'My TomTom' on the Internet. Luckily we had a road atlas and a smart phone with GPS on it, otherwise TomTom would have left us in the lurch.
The problem was resolved at the next camping site with WiFi by downloading a new map (3Gbytes took 2.5 hours) and resetting. It now works OK again but oddly Expedia and Trip Advisor have disappeared. Google still works though.

In summary Good & Bad but I would still recommend it to Caravanners.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to get there
This sat Nav is excellent, for when we are towing our caravan, it seemed the best system available when doing our research, and has proved so, now that we have used it.
