Having used a PDA with TomTom5, I hesitated before buying a self contained unit. An upcoming trip to Europe swung the decision for me and I am very pleased I bought it.
As per the other reviews, directions are excellent and quickly recalculate if you miss a turn. It updates quickly - I used to often miss turns on roundabouts with my PDA as it was too slow recognising where I was.
Three problems so far:
- the sucker falling off randomly.
- the extra subscription traffic reports being a total and misleading waste of time.
- staying in a hotel in France, I had to go on a trip out for the day. I set my "home location" to the car park in the hotel and tootled off, safe in the knowledge that I could just ask it to direct me home after the day out. Because, however, the "home location" wasn't on a road the unit refused to give me a route. That could have been sticky, although admittedly I could have spent some time browsing the map to find a nearby place.
It has reliably navigated me all over England and on a long journey into France - via the middle of Paris - without a hitch. Even remote areas seem well covered.
It picks up the satellite signal even in very built up areas and can even be used when walking through a city (you can change the route type in preferences).
I am constantly impressed by the clarity of the spoken directions, which can be set surprisingly loud despite the size of the unit.
Highly recommended.
