Review

A book about Tom Wright's books? Helping us sort through the theology that has so powerfully moved and inspired us? Brilliant! --Rob Bell, author of Sex God

Stephen Kuhrt's book makes a warm and convincing case that Tom Wright's theology has the potential to transform the local church, the academy and contemporary evangelicalism. This is a timely and accessible introduction to the significance of a formidable thinker and brave servant of God. --John Pritchard, Bishop of Oxford

Making good theology accessible and demonstrating its relevance for Christian life is an urgent need today. Stephen Kuhrt's book will be a very valuable contribution in narrowing the gap between the academy and the church, a gap which has often yawned far too wide. --Graham Tomlin, Dean, St Mellitus College

Product Description

Tom Wright, who has written a Foreword to this book, has achieved global recognition as a biblical theologian through his academic and popular publications. And yet alongside this recognition, there has been a widespread failure within both academia and the Church to engage fully with his thought and grapple with its implications. In Tom Wright For Everyone, Stephen Kuhrt challenges us to make this engagement. His enlightening summary of Tom Wright's theology addresses in particular some of weaknesses within the theology of contemporary evangelicalism, such as: The nature of the Christian hope; The significance of the resurrection of Jesus; The lack of a convincing theological basis for holistic mission; Treatments of sin, evil and the atonement; Approaches to the Bible and attitudes towards biblical scholarship; Ambivalence towards 'the good things of creation', the sacraments, and the Church. The latter part of this volume describes in detail the way in which the author has sought to put Tom Wright's theology into practice through the ministry and mission of his own parish, Christ Church, New Malden. This synthesis of the intellectual and the practical will be of much interest to those concerned to see how an integrated biblical theology can shape and resource the Church's response to the tasks and challenges of the twenty-first century. For Church leaders, theological students and Christian social activists, Tom Wright for Everyone will prove essential and fascinating reading.

Stephen manages to convey the enormity of Tom Wright's learning very succinctly and with clarity. For those who find Tom Wright demanding, this may be a good way in. But the real attraction of the book is the way in which it allows us to see how a Christian community can be radically changed when this understanding of Christian theology is brought to bear on the church of today. And a relatively short book, too!!

Tom Wright is undoubtably a leading theologian of our time. His prolific and ground-breaking work focused around the life and message of Jesus in the context of 1st century Israel and the task for the church in the 21st century has proved profoundly thought provoking, challenging and immensely encouraging and enabling.

In 'Tom Wright for Everyone', Stephen Kurht offers a masterly concise and accessible summary of Wright's theology.

However, for me, the story told of how Wright's theological insight has impacted on the mission, ministry, social enagement and renewal of a growing, open-evangelical church, with the empowerment of women in leadership, is inspiring.

I commend the book to you.

I found this book has a very useful summary of Tom Wright and it greatly helps to fit all the pieces together. It will be an invaluable reference for a quick memory prompt.
It's also very motivating in showing how the theology works out in practice.
Also encouraging is the fact that Stephen does not agree with Tom Wright on every detail.
The style is also uplifting - full of grace and truth.
