A nicely written book. Recommended even if you're new to C++,

I was searching for books relating to Java and Linux, having finished Nathan Meyers'. I then gave into the feeling that one cann't use Java to skip C++ altogether. I am impressed by the friendly style and the concise and clear coverage and demonstration of GNU and C++, at least in the couple of hundred pages I've read so far. I would recommend loading Linux on a second hard drive, rather than partioning - because I did that. But, I'll put as simply this: this is a nice book, an unpretentious book, written by someone who can get it across from the page. Try it as your first venture into C++, or if you've been around before in some other platform. The software is included on CD, development environment and all. As Tom says, it is excellent. If you're interested, go for it!

I've read book after book on c/c++ over the years, but this is the one that finally got me to sit down and start on the c++ road.For once the author doesn't try to overload the reader in the early stages. I'm learning to write kde programs, and find myself dipping back into this book for tips. My only big wish is that I could do with a section on automake autoconf etc, even if it were just to familiarise the reader with those extra files you find in projects. Perhaps some more links to reference material in the appendix. If you want to know c++ on linux this is a great start.

Quick and easy to read!,

Some people find thick and large programming books intimidating, most probably because those books tend to explain things in a more complicated and tiresome way. This book despite its size is however very well written, and always direct and to-the-point. I had been studying C/C++ for a little more than a year when I started reading this book, and I was surprised at how easily Tom Swan was able to get the message across. This book is a great read for anyone who wants to check out C++ in linux, and no other book that I've seen has been able to introduce the (lovely) GNU C++ environment in such an appealing manner. After you go GNU, there's no going back.
