Review

"Tom Smith is just as valuable a piece of kit as Hawkeye, Snicko and Hotspot in the Sky Sports commentary box, its interpretation of the Laws of the game is the first thing we turn to regarding decisions. It's a "must-have" alongside the Laws of cricket." --David Lloyd

To stop the rows. 17 Sep 2011

Unless you play cricket you wouldn't believe the detail questions that turn up. This book clears it all up. Well worth the money. Fabulous Christmas present for any cricketer. I've carried a law book for 20-30 years and Tom Smith is the best, the Rolls Royce.

As a cricket umpire or scorer who takes a pride in the job, you have Tom Smiths. Umpires and Scorers are told that when they first start to learn their trade. The reason? Tom Smiths not only sets out all the Laws of the Game, it explains the reasons why, and answers all the 'what if' questions. The questions that crop up in quizzes, or that if they happen in a game, you hear the commentators giving different answers before checking the scorers copy to give the viewers the correct answer.
Questions like 'the batsman hits the ball back at the bowler, who does not hold the catch, but deflects the ball onto the stumps at the bowlers end, the non-striker being out of his ground. The bowler catches the ball rebounding from the stumps. The ball has not touched the ground between leaving the bat, and being caught. Which batsman is out; the striker out caught, or the non-striker out, run out'
If you don't know the answer and why, then buy the book.
On second thoughts, even if you don't do pub sports quizzes, but simply enjoy cricket, buy the book anyway
