Biography

Some time in the last few years Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took a left turn. Maybe it was when Petty woke up in the night with the idea of reuniting his first band, Mudcrutch, to cut the album they never got a chance to make back in the early 70s. Maybe it was when the Heartbreakers assembled the mammoth multi-disc The Live Anthology, which detailed thirty years of concerts. Maybe it ... Product Description

CD Description

The first ever career-spanning multiple-disc set of live recordings by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers brings together the best material from thirty years, culled from hundreds of hours of live concert recordings covering every era of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ tours--and represents the best tracks as chosen by producers Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Ryan Ulyate.

The producers made no fixes or overdubs, letting the newly mixed original recordings showcase the invention, spontaneity, craft, and the musicianship that has made Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers among the most celebrated live performers of their time. Along with powerful interpretations of their own classic hits and originals, The Live Anthology features the band tackling some of their best-loved cover material, from classics to obscure tarcks and unexpected adaptations. The theme from Goldfinger, the Zombies’ "I Want You Back Again", the Grateful Dead’s "Friend of the Devil", early Fleetwood Mac’s "Oh Well", Booker T. and the MGs’ "Green Onions", James Brown’s "Good, Good Lovin'" and many more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Live Anthology 18 Dec 2009
By Spider Monkey HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
After a long wait and the excellent `Pack Up The Plantation' live album we finally have a Tom Petty Live Collection and it is amazing. Across four disc you get a wide selection of his live performances and examples of his popular tracks, more obscure ones, as well as some top flight covers. This package has the outer box, four imitation record sleeves holding the discs and a great little booklet with an introduction by Tom explaining how he chose various tracks. I love the versions of `Wildflowers' and `Angel Dream' on offer here and I have been playing `Lost Without You' over and over since hearing it, but to be honest every song on this collection is a gem. You get to hear how tight this band is and how much the audience react to their performances and to say I got goosebumps when certain songs started would be no exaggeration. I have been hankering for a live collection for so long now and this has satiated my appetite until the next wonderful album arrives. If you are a fan of Tom then snap this up and if you are a fan of good music and classy playing then this is required listening as well. Simply outstanding.

Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone 3 Dec 2009
By Amazon Customer TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
With nearly 40 years work under his belt Gainesvilles finest continues to rock his audiences. This rather huge collection may seem haphazard at first glance but is really well put together and allows for a real range of styles and emotions from concerts all over the US as well as Toronto & London although it is not completely without flaws. With 30 years of recordings to play with it's not surprising that the quality and performances vary so much but what is perhaps a little unexpected is the fact that one or two classics are missing,('Don't come around here no more' for one), and that the well known singles that the non-fan would be likely to head for are given such poor representation here. The Version of 'Learning to fly' is quite touching but 'Wont back down' is pretty weak and 'Free fallin', surely the most famous Petty track, is downright awful. He warbles and it's pretty tuneless. John Meyer's live version remains the one to beat.
A pity really as there are some real gems here. Petty has covered quite a few songs by other singers and he always seems to add something worthwhile & the true is same here. 'Goldfinger' may be a bit potty but 'Something in the air', 'Green onions' & in particular a great menacing version of Fleetwood Macs 'Oh well' are welcome additions. As is often the case with live versions Petty has the opportunity to extend certain tracks and introduce some great musicianship and allow a song to unfold at a more leisurely pace. 'Breakdown', 'Spike' & 'It's good to be king' all take their time and are all the better for it.
The mastering of these performances is clear and weighty and there's a good sense of depth although at times the sound of an audience is allowed to intrude a little too much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great career-spanning live collection 19 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
I can't believe some of the negative comments that have been posted about this. It's a great package at a great price - superb recording quality, performances and song selection. My only minor criticism would be that a couple of the covers eg 'Diddy wah diddy' & 'I'm a man' are not up to the standard of the original material, but this is nit-picking. If you like Tom Petty don't hesitate. If you don't like Tom Petty this could change your mind, unless you don't like rock music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Quirky Treat of Live Gems 5 Feb 2012
Format:Audio CD
I am always doubtful of those who claim to like the full body of a great artist's catalogue. For me the process of creating a great body of work involves exploring, sometimes turning back and sometimes failing. I have followed Tom Petty's career from his first album, seeing him twice in the early years. Despite him having eschewed UK tours for the past two decades I have followed his work closely. The Live Anthology is an excellent way for fans living outside of the United States to catch up on what we have been missing. I confess to holding a mild grudge against Tom for deserting the country which recognised him first, and gave him his first significant commercial success!

On the face of it Tom came to the UK at the worst possible time, when Punk was breaking and the mob was assembling to storm the barricades of bloated flaccid musical self indulgence, so why did he find a place in the hearts of UK music fans when the absurd pomposity of rock generally, and US rock in particular, was being binned? His eponymous first album musically was trad rock, at the opposite end of the spectrum to what was happening in London and the backstreets of New York. The leather jacket on the album cover art the only nod to the emerging scene. But it did have one classic song on it (arguably his only cross-over hit and still his signature song) "American Girl" and that drew attention even though it was against the flow of the UK musical tide. Closer inspection reveals two other songs which are live staples 36 years on, "Breakdown" and "The Wild One", a balance of strong material, and only one, "Mystery Man " which has disappeared without trace. In retrospect, it was a stronger debut than was apparent at the time.
