I watched this as a young boy on a black and White tv.
When I'd seen it released on DVD I just had to get it and as it's all in colour
It was an extra bonus.
Centered around a young London boy, sent to live with relatives in yourkshire on the outbreak
Of the first world war and the many adventures he encounters whilst living there.
If you were a young boy of the 60s and enjoyed boys own comics and books this series will
Take you back as it did me.

this tv programme is magic, better than I remembered it even, although the box set has (all 26 episodes), there was actually an episode 27, series 3 which only consisted of that 1 episode, called, 'Tom Grattan and the secret machine'. still brilliant though,

We found the narration consistently spoiling the story and very annoying, he seemed to be determined to do the actors job for them by describing nearly everything they thought.
Many stories are rather childish but reading several reviews by lovers of this series we are in the minority it seems, but feel it may be helpful to anyone purchasing this series that this continuous narration may not suit everyone, it makes it difficult to engage with the characters.

I didn't see Tom Grattan's War when it came out but it was worth the wait to see it on DvD. Essentially it's a series of adventures involving 15 year old Tom Grattan who's been evacuated at the beginning of WWI to a Yorkshire farm run by Mrs Kirby & her farmhand come helper Stan. His partner for most of the episodes is Julie (aged 17?), Mrs Kirby's daughter & each episode is introduced by the Storyteller who is living in the 1960s; he acts as a continuity throughout each episode & if I have any contrary observation it is that, occasionally, this voice over interrupts the flow of what are excellent adventures. The acting of the main cast is outstanding & believable throughout even if some of the adventures are a little fantastical. Despite roaming over much of the beautiful Yorkshire countryside the episodes capture the almost claustrophobic atmosphere that existed even as late as the early 50s in which young people right into late teens found themselves. Naturally, the quality of the DvDs is below modern standards but this is only to be expected. A thoroughly good, watchable series
