Amazon.co.uk Review

Despite being billed as an add-on pack, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Rogue Spear: Black Thorn does actually work as a stand-alone PC game in its own right. And that's good news, for this is the latest in the so-called genre of "soldier sims", where you lead a group of troops into various circumstances to save the day--and it's a good one at that.

Despite initial appearances, covert operations are very much at the top of the agenda here, as the missions involve sneaking around, quietly taking out bad guys without disturbing the others and rescuing hostages intact. As with the previous Rainbow Six releases, the basic rule of one bullet can end your mission stands here too--you really will get no benefit from charging in all guns blazing, and that makes things satisfyingly challenging.

The ultimate effect is to make the game incredibly tense and quite difficult, especially for those new to the genre. The controls take a while to grasp, although once you're in the swing of ordering fellow troops around while keeping yourself alive, you can't help but be gripped. There's plenty to do and frankly you need to do the lot if you're going to succeed. Very often, a mission will be made or broken in the planning stages, even before your soldiers have set foot into hostile territory.

In truth, this pack doesn't add an enormous amount to the original game, but the very fact that it does offer more of the same is sure to satiate the franchise's growing genre of fans. And with sky-high production values and gripping gameplay still top of the agenda, we can only hope for plenty more in the series in years to come.--Simon Brew

This game far exceeds it previous relations such as Covert Operations and Rogue Spear.
The setup is the same as the previous games but the level design has far improved graphics.
The maps actually run on seperate levels.
One map i played was Thai Hospital. The amount of detail on this map was phenominal, bookcases, hospital beds glass partitions etc.
And this game runs magnificently online, even if your on 56k.
The designer included a good package which has a nice and easy setup and a great co op game to while away the winter hours locked away in those darkened rooms.
This game is on par with any other First Person Shooter.
Go buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars **Warning this product is highly Addictive** 6 Nov 2001

Black Thorn is the best game on the market is an understatement. Other games will seem mundane after Black Thorn and can not compare to the adrenaline rush that you get when you encounter terrorists, or when playing across the net against other teams.

What makes Black Thorn unique is the scenarios, locations and weapons. When choosing weapons, firepower and accuracy are major considerations as one shot can kill and the realistic movements of the anti-terrorist teams within the game add realism. This helps to engross the player, because a stray bullet can cost you a mission if you hit a hostage. The most important feature beyond the graphics and game play is the strategic planning that must go in before a mission. You must consider every aspect of you breach, based on available intelligence given in briefings. Poor planning will cost the lives of hostages and you team. Along with custom mission settings the game will keep the player interested for a long time, with a number of alternative scenarios. This is an addictive, must have game, you will be left wondering why other games aren't this good!

Other titles in the series include; Rainbow Six, Eagle Watch, Rouge Spear, Urban Ops, Covert Ops. To get the best out of you Black Thorn experience I recommend a Microsoft Sidewinder Dual Strike controller.

4.0 out of 5 stars ROGUE SPEAR BLACK THORN 21 April 2004
The game has a lot of potential and has plenty of opertunities to give youall types of military procedures from stealth recons, to hostage rescue,to shear brutal fire fights. Theres a huge range of weapons availibleincluding snipers. The campaign mode allows you to take control of a teamof Rainbow troopers (Don't be put off by the name, there modern day specaloperations forces) and have a long string of missions all leading up tothe elimination of the terriost leader. All of these levels involverescuing hostages in some way. That be wether it's rescuing them face toface or sniping the driver of a bus there in. Theres lowds of missionsavialible for a free mission. You can play any of them in Lone Wolf,Recon, Assault, Hostage Rescue and Terriost Hunt. On some you can adjustthe number of terriost. The guns are incredibly realistic but you doesn'thave as many options when it comes to arresting terriost or hostages. It'smore like their there, either hostages or terriost and you must leave themthere, you can't hand cuff them or anything like that. All in all though,it's not that badder game and is well worth a deeper look into if yourinterested.
