Daren King is a god among men! Having enjoyed 'Boxy An Star'- to which 'Tom Boler' is a prequel by the way, and then wheezed with incredulous laughter at 'Jim Giraffe'- a book so excellent that having read it and lent it out I haven't seen it for over a year, I awaited 'Tom Boler' with trembling hands. It is a book to be devoured, stopping only at the end of the page to breathe and howl with laughter.

The writing style seems reminiscent of Russell Hoban's 'Riddley Walker' and runs like stream-of-consciousness from a 9 year old (appropriate really considering the age of our hero Tom) and once you have navigated a few pages you don't seem to notice the wayward punctuation and irregular sentence structure. Style is one thing- and in this case very funny and intelligently used; the content is altogether too outrageous for a mere 1000 word review, encompassing Tom being abandoned by his mother, talking to the TV, being successively re-housed with his Uncle Dustman, a posh nympho called Primula, and a transvestite wannabe actor (the eponymous Boxy from King's first book) ,meeting the tallest boy in the world... all the while being 9 years old and little.

This book must be read. There are no two ways about it, and then go and read King's other work, take a deep breath, calm down and await the next book from one of Britain's best novelists.

Loved this book, have read the other Daren King books, and this I enjoyed as much if not more. I love the 'tom boler' style of writing, it's a much more interesting and entertaining way to experience his world. Looking very forward to Daren's next book.

Fitfully amusing, says the Guardian review, and quickly tiresome I would add. The quirky style bodes well, but soon starts to grate, as it holds back the plot development and characterisation, such as it is. Disjointed and ultimately disappointing.
