Product Description

Jez Nelson, BBC Jazz on 3

'a cracking album of highly original music'

CD Description

With their stimulating debut for Babel, 23-year-old trumpeter and composer Tom Arthurs’ quintet Centripede highlights the inventive energy at the centre of the thriving improvisational UK underground jazz scene. Part of London’s bold F-IRE collective, Centripede’s eponymous CD is influenced by the dance rhythms of global music: from Africa to Eastern Europe, contemporary classical, electronica, and left field jazz taking in Gil Evans, Django Bates though to Steve Coleman and Kenny Wheeler, Centripede are a fierce collective in every sense. Interaction between daring improvisation and Tom’s pungent but witty and melodious compositions/arrangements is key to this haunting, biting music. ‘I learnt something that night! It is so nice to hear a group of young musicians creating some new music. And Tom Arthurs’ Centripede is just that. Bravo!’ Joe Lovano - following a performance at Banff Centre. The band are touring the UK through October & November at the following venues and Tom Arthurs has been selected as a "Rising Star" for the 2004 festival 8th Oct: Vortex Jazz Bar, London 23rd Oct: Biggin Hall, Coventry 6th Nov : The Cliffs Pavilion , Southend 21st Nov: Brighton Jazz Club 25th Nov :Schmazz at The Cluny, Newcastle 26th Nov: Goodfellowship Inn, Hull 28th Nov: Bonedangles, Birmingham

Cleanly blown, pure-toned trumpet; feathery soprano sax : spikey brittle guitar balanced with 'restless fire' of percussion - is John Fordham's view in reviewing this innovative first album.

Inspired by world dance musics contemporary and traditional with strategic improvisation, makes challenging but rewarding listening.

Jazzwise notes the band as one to watch

Tom Arthurs is a nifty little trumpet cat. Check out that tune with the weird groove. Is it four and a half? Amazing!

Beautiful music. Vibey!
