In an era of pristine CGI animated movies it is great to see something that has aged so well as Tom and Jerry. Now that I have kids of my own I am getting to enjoy these cartoons all over again. They make me laugh out loud and the action makes me cringe at times but it is great fun and a nice contrast to the sanitised plots of modern children's entertainment. My kids adore them and it is nice to see something that maintains its appeal across several generations. I have this DVD as well as volume 2 and volume 3 all of which cover the classic era of the duo. I would recommend all three without hesitation.

Finally! The first volume in a comprehensive collection of Tom and Jerry cartoons. With the exception of 'Million Dollar Cat', unaccountably missing, this disc comprises the first 24 films, made by the great Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera in their pre-TV days (Producer Fred Quimby tends to get the credit but he had no creative input and used to tell the artists to keep the noise down when they laughed at their own work).
The first few pieces, though still top-notch by any objective standard, show the artists and characters getting into their stride and aren't quite as punchy as the later ones, but things really pick up on side B, showing Tom and Jerry at their peak. 'Quiet Please' is possibly the most perfect comedy cartoon ever made, but really these are all gems - as good as cartoons get. Forget the myth that cartoons are for kids - you can enjoy these to the full at any age. It's a credit to their quality that few people today realise how old they are - these ones were made between 1940 and 1945 - and since nearly all the humour is visual, the appeal is truly universal.
The transfer quality is first-rate, with just a little too much contrast in the first one or two cartoons - perhaps unavoidable given the age of the original material. The prints are a little spotty and scratchy but certainly not enough to hinder the enjoyment at all.
The only downside to this disc is the unfortunate lack of extras - the history of these masterworks is nothing like as well documented as it ought to be and this was a missed opportunity to set that right, but the cartoons themselves are so good, and such good value here at nearly three hours, that five stars seems barely adequate.

I must say that I have always been a Tom & Jerry fan, so it was long overdue for me to start owning the collection. I bought Volumes 2 & 3 at the same time as getting this one, and despite any editing and overdubbing, I still enjoy settling down to a couple of hours fun entertainment from these timeless characters. My little toddler son also enjoys the Tom & Jerry cartoons - and it takes a lot to get him to sit still for a few minutes - he really seems to like the mouse character as he squeals with delight and claps his hands. Good DVD, would recommend this to all fans, old and young alike.

The best classics episodes of Tom & Jerry forget it about new movies in where Tom & Jerry talk.
These are the original episodes which I been watching since I was a kid and now my little daughter loves as well.
Just remember to turn the DVD as is a Two side format DVD
Side A more than 1 hour and a half
Side B about 1 hour and 20 min.
I really recommend this DVD especially to watch with young kids (one or two years old which get bored with long movies) with this one they can watch three or four episodes a day (each episode about 5 min) and by the end of the week just start again.

This is a near-complete collection of the early cartoons, which remain timeless classics, with plenty of slapstick humour on offer.

I grew up with the original, unedited, T & J cartoons that were broadcast in the UK until 2000, and released on VHS in the '80s and '90s, so it's highly disappointing to see that you can't get some of the originals any more. This otherwise top-notch collection is marred by many PC cuts, most notably the frequent use of the overdubbed version of Mammy Two-Shoes (though at least she appears in the cartoons rather than being edited out altogether).

Okay, by all means they should release edited versions of the cartoons for people who find the originals too racially offensive, but no way should we have phased out the distribution of the original unedited versions- most people weren't offended by them, and many find the edited versions inferior to the originals.

The above said, the Classic Collection is the best collection of Tom & Jerry cartoons available- other versions are either more heavily edited, or are lower quality. Hopefully in future someone will release a set of unedited Tom & Jerry cartoons on DVD in the UK, of similar quality to this release, but for now, if you want a set of T & J cartoons, this is the set to get.

I also own Volumes 2, 3 and 4; the same assessment applies to those volumes.

I have waited for years an occasion like this: I hope Warner Bros is going to produce the whole T&J collection on DVD: fantastic quality, perfect sound. Only one falldown: a couple of cartoons are shown in the censored version. Pity!
