More About the Author

Told at 23 we couldn't have children, my husband and I quit our jobs, camped around England until we found where we wanted to settle and took jobs merely to pay the bills and have the days free. At 30 we went to university, as undergraduates. Since then, I have spent most of my professional life as a self-employed researcher and trainer in the education, museums and libraries sectors. Our daughter arrived when I was 40!

Although my work involved writing research papers, I'd never tried writing anything else. Sitting working at my computer one day, the name 'Tolly' quite literally came into my head and I had this overwhelming compulsion to write about her. Having received genuinely unexpected positive feedback and some great advice from adults and children, I wrote more stories about Tolly, with the hope that they would give young children as much enjoyment hearing/reading them, as I had in writing them.

This really is a set of lovely stories for children. Tolly and her friend Hannah have adventures at the seaside, on a picnic, at the swimming pool, in the snow and anywhere else you can think of that children love and get excited about. The start of the book is a little bit sad in that Tolly's dad died and she tries to keep her memories of him alive by talking to him in their `special place'. This is not an upsetting or sad book for little ones, it is sensitively written with lots of happiness around the story too but it is unfortunately a reality of life that might help children understand how they or a friend feels about losing a parent.

Each chapter, nine in total, is a self contained story involving Tolly, her mum, her friends and her dog, Poppy. The writing style is user friendly and should help to increase a child's vocabulary with the use of a wide variety of words and phrases which have been cleverly thought about to avoid duplication of common words. The description is so vivid that a child will easily be able to imagine Tolly having her birthday party, playing at the seaside and Poppy digging for treasure etc. Chapters are just the right length for storytime or bedtime and all have a happy feel to them. One or two morals are thrown in to make a child think about their actions too but all in a subtle way.

Tolly is nine years old. Two years ago her father died after a short illness and she still misses him a great deal. She even has a special place in the barn where she goes to talk to him to tell him all about her adventures. This rather charming book aimed at 6-9 year olds tells the story of a whole year of Tolly's adventures with her dog Poppy and her best friend Hannah.

I really rather enjoyed this little book. Each of the children's adventures is told as a short self contained story and covers subjects such as finding buried treasure, the village fête, a trip to the seaside, building snowmen in winter and several others. These wonderfully idyllic tales capture the innocence of childhood superbly but are also exciting enough to keep young readers entertained.

This book is suitable for reading together with younger children or for solo reading by more advanced readers and has quite a lot of content that should encourage questions and discussion.

Overall: 4 stars - If I were to criticise this book in any way it would be to say that the world in which Tolly lives is possibly slightly too perfect, but that can easily be forgiven in a children's book.
