Product Description

A revised and expanded reissue containing over 1,200 brain-teasing questions on the legendary works of J.R.R. Tolkien, published to coincide with the release of the third and final The Lord of The Rings movie.

How many Hobbits joined the Fellowship of the Ring?

What colour is the Orcs’ skin?

Why did Gandalf have difficulty in opening the West-door of Khazad-dum?

Who betrayed Berien and Luthien to Thingol?

What was Farmer Giles’ full name?

The worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, from the saga of Middle-earth to a brief visit to Wootton Major, are so rich and varied that they inspire legions of followers of different ages. This peerless revised and expanded quiz book offers over 1,200 questions and answers, including easy starter questions and more difficult tie-breakers, to test the range and depth of your knowledge. And whereas every right answer will confirm your mastery over your subject, every wrong answer will be a learning experience all of its own!

At first glance this little quiz book should be a gem for Tolkien fans, and indeed there is a lot of interesting stuff in it and some good quizzing.however as you start to use it you find two things. The first, that may make quizzers unhappy, is the unevenness of the question-levels even within single quizzes. Thus you can go straight from the most basic what-kind-of-creature-was-Gimli sort of question to the most abstruse aspects of Elvish genealogy from deep in the "Silmarillion". Quizzers who prefer that roughly the same level be kept throughout a given quiz will not be too happy.

I did find one definite mistake, we are told that Haradrim = Easterlings (Quiz 40, answers), when in fact they are Southrons (the correct answer was Easterlings). And in Quiz 20 answers we are told that Sam Gamgee is the father of Bilbo. Yes, he did name one of his many eventual offspring Bilbo but I fear a lot of the book's users will not know that "small print" fact and may well dismiss it as another error that casts doubt on the reliability of the whole book. That was a quirk too far. A pity, because the book is enjoyable.
