Book Description

12 Sep 2013 Calendar

With over 40 new pieces of artwork based on The Hobbit, The Tolkien Calendar 2014 features 12 never-before-seen full colour illustrations, and 28 sketches by artist Jemima Catlin.

Each month depicts The Hobbit’s most famous scenes, including Bert, William and Tom being turned to stone, the Elves singing in the trees, Bilbo riding a barrel, and Smaug attacking Lake-town.

The Official Tolkien Calendar has been an established publishing event for Tolkien fans and collectors for the last four decades. Tying in with a brand new illustrated edition of The Hobbit, the 2014 edition is a truly charming addition to the series by a gifted artist whose paintings lend themselves perfectly to the calendar format.

Product Description

Review

‘The Hobbit belongs to a very small class of books which have nothing in common save that each admits us to a world of its own. Its place is with Alice and The Wind in the Willows.’
Times Literary Supplement

‘One of the best loved characters in English fiction… a marvellous fantasy adventure’
Daily Mail

‘Finely written saga of dwarves and elves, fearsome goblins and trolls… an exciting epic of travel, magical adventure, working up to a devastating climax’
The Observer

This is a beautiful, quality product. It is a good size (both the artwork and space for writing).
Couldn't recommend it enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful 17 Feb 2014

Jemima Catlin's pictures on this calendar are a delight. I saw this online at amazon when browsing for a calendar for myself. I hadn't heard of Ms Catlin before then and was attracted by The Hobbit as I've been a fan of Bilbo et all for nearly 50 years now. Looking at the pictures on the amazon site and more of Jemima's work online I took the plunge and I'm glad that I did. There is a lot of charm in her visualisations of Middle Earth which accords with the kind of pictures that I've always seen in my mind when reading the books. I've nothing against Peter Jackson's vision, but it's easy to get swept along with this and let it rule your imagination. Jemima's lovely pics correct this. I'm glad to have discovered her work.

Tolkien wrote THE HOBBIT as a story for children, not for adults! I have been a TOLKIEN fan for over forty years and have enjoyed reading his books over and over again and have bought many calendars, all of which were very good (except that horrible Dutch one) once again, bearing in mind the hobbit is a kid's book, this calendar is really O.K.

Brilliant addition to the collection. Catlin's illustrations are detailed, traditional and charming - just a pity it's not easier to find in the shops - but you can always rely on amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tolkein Calendar 5 Jan 2014

Each year, the official Tolkein Calendar is released. These are a nice representation of the books showing an artist's view rather than a film maker's.

Lovely pictures by Jemima C. I shall enjoy revealing each picture on the appointed day (the first of the appropriate month) so cannot say much about the pictures…. except that I saw many of them during her delightful presentation at The Tolkien Society's Oxonmoot this September. I shall enjoy it.
