2 of 3 people found the following review helpful By S J Buck TOP 500 REVIEWER on 12 May 2008
Format: DVD
This is the Oscar Peterson Big 4. Martin Drew is on drums, Neils Pederson - Bass, Joe Pass -Guitar. The recording was made at the Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo on 17th October 1983.

The tracks are:

City Lights
On Danish Shores (a Pederson original)
Medley: Lush Life/Caravan
My Shining Hour
You Look Good To Me
Mississauga Rattler

I suspect this was never intended for release, because the filming whilst perfectly fine, is from fixed positions and the sound has occasional variations in level.

However the playing is, as you would expect, quite magnificent. Peterson, Pederson and Pass produced one of my all-time favourite albums (The Trio 1973) and here with the addition of Martin Drew they are all in great form. In 1983 Oscar Peterson was still playing at very best, and on the evidence of this DVD was in particularly inspired form that night. If you want to see and hear just how good he was go straight to the last track (Mississauga Rattler). This is a barnstorming performance at a stratospheric tempo with great performances from the rest of the band as well.

The running time is 54:41, its a region 0 disc and says Hi-Fi Stereo, so its not 5.1 or anything like that. There are no extras. I would have docked it 1/2 a star if Amazon allowed it because of this and the occasional sound variations. However overall a strongly recommended DVD for all Jazz and Oscar Peterson fans.
