5.0 out of 5 stars ...may leave you punch drunk... 25 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
'Tokyo Fist' is (as far as I know) the third film by director Tsukamoto Shin'ya, who also directed 'Tetsuo - The Iron Man' and 'Tetsuo II - Body Hammer', both of which are excellent. This film is far more down-to-earth that these two, but that does not mean that the director has made any compromises. From the outset, 'Tokyo Fist' sets of at a helluva pace, with serious visual intensity oozing from the clips of boxers training. Before long, the film has encompassed failing relationships, physical fitness, piercing addictions, jealousy, and much blood-letting, all with an intense industrial soundrack driving it along!! If you like your films brutal, this is yer man!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars blu-ray 26 Jun 2014
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
It's great to see Tsukamoto's crazy, fast-paced but surprisingly accessible Tokyo Fist on blu-ray. It looks great, has some nice extras, nice packaging and the film itself is arguably even better now than it was in the 90s - I'd forgotten how gory it is!

4.0 out of 5 stars The crazed energy of Tsukamoto 24 Nov 2013
Once seen never ever forgotten. Made after the Second Tetsuo film, Tsukamoto turns his visual experimentation and furious energy onto boxing. You'd think that would have calmed him down, wrong. The violence of the boxing has an intense explosive quality, when a nasty punch connects Tsukamoto has faces exploding with gore and the same kind of disgusting stop motion that punctuated Tetsuo. The use of colour and a pounding industrial soundtrack also aid in creating a intimidating aura of Tokyo.

Extreme is the word that describes this film best: extremely unforgettable imagery, extreme relationships with Tokyo and an extreme resolution. The final few minutes is a sequence of insane and graphic imagery, this is no easy resolution to an uneasy film. No one makes film like this guy, either in Japan or in the world, Cronenberg is the closest contemporary but he is placid in comparison. Tokyo Fist is a great film approachable to a select few, but its one that I wont be rushing back to for a very long time, if ever, this is the definition of a one time only deal. A proposition that is all too common with the work of Tsukamoto.

5.0 out of 5 stars cult class 24 Dec 2010
If you are already familiar with Shinya Tsukamoto's work (the most notable being Tetsuo Iron Man and Tetsuo 2), you should have a good idea of what to expect from this movie and will not be disappointed. For those unfamiliar with his work he would be best described as an amalgamation of David Lynch, Miike Takashi, Darren Aronofski and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. This goes no where near giving this guy the credit he deserves though as he has such a distictive visual style that is recognisible immediately, a true auteur. Filmed with a minimal budget Tsukamoto uses all the tricks in the book to create a visceral energy that jolts, shocks and amuses in equal measure. This is a film with fantastic surreal flourishes, unusual cinematography and editing that holds true to Tskumoto's dynamic and original visual style. Essentially this is a love triangle but we are also treated to body modification (a running theme for Tskumoto), power struggles and some brilliant and bloody boxing fights. It also has one of my favourite scenes in any movie ever featuring a prolonged scene of a woman puching a man in the face as he grins and giggles like a maniac as his face is slowly turned into a grotesque blackcurrent. Bold, original, funny and violent - if you are a fan of extreme, surreal asian cinema this should be right up your street.
