it's a Gondry collaboration art film.. not a tourist instructional dvd,
By James Hamilton (London UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tokyo! [DVD] (DVD)
I saw this film in the cinema and enjoyed it all the way through. It was about a year ago but I wanted to buy the film DVD (after accidentally buying the behind the scenes documentary in Tokyo).
I was sad to see this getting a one star review because the other reviewer obviously didn't know what they were buying, and so was disappointed, it's a real shame to blame that on the film. It's a project by 3 directors making 3 short films, I originally went to see it because I liked what I'd seen of Michel Gondry's work. If you've not heard of Gondry or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind then perhaps this might not be what you think, I don't claim to be an expert on his work but what I've seen there's a fantasy aspect rather than being real life, that's what film is about sometimes.. escape. If you're curious to see this, expect to see abstract social commentary, feelings of isolation in a big city, overstaying your welcome, struggle for recognition and acceptance and living an obsessive compulsive existence among other things. If you've been to Tokyo or have any interest in Japanese culture, it's sometimes like watching a film set in your own city, you get excited when you recognise somewhere or something you know on screen (I'm so used to seeing films set in USA so I don't get that feeling often) The three stories are very different and if you like anything about Japan then you might find this entertaining, I liked it enough to want to buy it and see it again..

Tokyo Stories,
This review is from: Tokyo! [DVD] (DVD)
Three different directors with three different films - whose only common link is that they are set in Tokyo. All three are well made and well played, with the latter two, I thought, being especially effective.Without giving anything important away, the films are about, firstly, a young couple moving to Tokyo and having to stay in a friend's small apartment while they look for a place of their own. Secondly, an eccentric westerner who lives alone in the sewers beneath the city and periodically pops up to terrorize the citizens - I thought this was a particularly imaginative piece of a sort that I have not seen before. And thirdly, the romantic story of a recluse who, one Saturday, falls in love with the girl who delivers his pizza and has to force himself out of the house, for the first time in over ten years, in order to pursue her. I thought this last film was both touching and funny, and it includes what now seems like a very prescient earthquake scene. Tokyo! is made up of three very idiosyncratic and even eccentric films that I will certainly be watching for a second time.

This review is from: Tokyo [Blu-ray] [2008] [US Import] (Blu-ray)
This looks great and includes one of my favourite directors around Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder, The Host) - both of which are mentioned by Tarantino as his wish list since becoming a director:
[] Also will have an interesting take from the unique humour of Michel Gondry.
