Three different directors with three different films - whose only common link is that they are set in Tokyo. All three are well made and well played, with the latter two, I thought, being especially effective.
Without giving anything important away, the films are about, firstly, a young couple moving to Tokyo and having to stay in a friend's small apartment while they look for a place of their own. Secondly, an eccentric westerner who lives alone in the sewers beneath the city and periodically pops up to terrorize the citizens - I thought this was a particularly imaginative piece of a sort that I have not seen before. And thirdly, the romantic story of a recluse who, one Saturday, falls in love with the girl who delivers his pizza and has to force himself out of the house, for the first time in over ten years, in order to pursue her. I thought this last film was both touching and funny, and it includes what now seems like a very prescient earthquake scene.
Tokyo! is made up of three very idiosyncratic and even eccentric films that I will certainly be watching for a second time.
