It's the ultimate loo book --Period Living and Traditional Homes

Full of humour, with lively photography from six continents, it's a great gift --Sphere

Product Description

Powder room, comfort station, privy, loo, dunny ... the infinite variety of names we invent for this universal necessity, the toilet, is matched by an extraordinary variety of designs worldwide, from miniature log cabins in the Canadian wilderness to state-of-the-art cubicles in Japan, and from huts on stilts in the Caribbean to solar-powered sanitary ware in New Zealand. This amusing but highly informative photographic journey reveals the idiosyncrasy and inventiveness that characterize the construction of the humble toilet around the globe. Along the way, the reader encounters every possible permutation, from the traditional English thunderbox to the Swazi thatched beehive hut, and discovers the fascinating cultural and historical differences that can make our travels to other countries so enjoyable.

Worth a look 14 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
This review of toilets ancient and modern, makeshift and sophisticated, opulant and basic is great fun, often thought provoking and sometimes downright scary. A great source of ideas for designers.

Lav-ishly Illustrated 15 Dec 2011

You can tell a lot about a culture and a country by looking at the toilets - at least that seems to be the message of this book. Offering a world tour toilet by toilet, you'll find a blend of fun, funky, functional and downright freaky ways to do what everyone has to do.
Each photograph comes with an explanation of why the authors chose it and an indication of the significance of the toilet featured. It's the perfect book to leave next to your toilet - but not if you've only got one and you don't want to encourage people to linger.
My only objection is the absence of the infamous German 'poo shelf' toilet (not only Germany - the Austrians, Swiss and even the Dutch sometimes have them).

good picture book 6 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
this book has some really nice pictures.
toilets are divided 'by continents' and shows wide range of them. though sometimes similar ones are repeating..

but what i really missed all the time reading it is two things
-a bit more history for the beginning.. it mentions some really interesting things but doesnt go deeper into details.. what i expected
-and related i think- a bit technical data, why the old style toilets where made one way or another.. what were benefits, why it changed.. why there are such differences between continents
so rating with 3.5 stars:) -0.5 for the cover
