Product Description

The Jimmy Heath Big Band recorded live at the Blue Note jazz club, NYC in 2011 to celebrate Heath's 85th birthday. The band includes jazz stars such as trumpeter Roy Hargrove, saxophonist Antonio Hart and drummer Lewis Nash. They perform a mixture of Heath originals and jazz standards by Charlie Parker and Billy Strayhorn, amongst others.

Jimmy Heath has long been recognised as a brilliant saxophonist and a magnificent composer and arranger. Jimmy is the middle brother of the legendary Heath Brothers (bassist Percy Heath and drummer Tootie Heath), and is the father of Mtume. He has performed with nearly all the jazz greats of the last fifty years, from Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis and Howard McGhee to Wynton Marsalis. During his career, Jimmy has performed on more than 100 albums including seven with The Heath Brothers and twelve as a leader. He has also written more than 125 compositions, many of which have become jazz standards.

Personnel: Jimmy Heath (tenor & soprano saxophones), Antonio Hart, Mark Gross (alto saxophone & flute), Charles Davis (tenor saxophone), Bobby Lavell (tenor saxophone & flute), Frank Basile (baritone saxophone), Roy Hargrove, Frank Greene, Greg Gisbert, Diego Urcola, Michael Mossman (trumpet), Steve Davis, Jason Jackson, John Mosca (trombone), Jeff Nelson (bass trombone), Jeb Patton (piano), Peter Washington (bass), Lewis Nash (drums)

4.0 out of 5 stars Togetherness - Jimmy Gets it together, 7 Jan 2014
By J. D. Naylor TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Excellent live big band session to celebrate Jimmy's 85th Birthday. As you would expect from Jimmy Heath, this is a tasteful and swinging session with a top notch cast of players. With trumpeters Roy hargrove and Greg Gisbert, altoists Antonio hart and Mark Gross and the always dependable Steve Davis on trombone, you know you are in good hands. The live sound from the Blue Note club is spot on with every soloist audible above the ensemble playing and the overall sound mix is excellent.
Any faults ? Jimmy maybe takes a solo or two too many where you would have rather have heard a little more of Hart or Hargrove, but hey, its Jimmy's big day so I think we can indulge an elderly gent some solo time.
Saying that, he's still in good shape for a man in his mid eighties.
All in all a fine big band session that will give you much listening pleasure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining 15 Feb 2014

While I have always embraced many genres of music, I was not familiar with Jimmy Heath until I heard an interview with him on NPR. I really appreciated the energy and passion he conveyed. There is not a bad cut on the disc, but I think what I enjoy most is the tight sound captured live of an 85 year old musician. I highly recommend it.

Jimmy is still playing with joy and promise from a leader who established himself many years ago as one of the giants in the business, and is still carrying the torch today.
5.0 out of 5 stars Jimmy Heath - The Little Big Giant 11 Mar 2014

Again, those of you who are lovers of the Bebop Jazz you don't want to miss this CD. This is a great CD that Jimmy Heath has put together. He has some outstanding players on this CD that all seem to be synchronized very well together. Jeb Patton is extra nice on the piano, and of course Antonio Hart, Roy Hargrove, Jason Jackson, and Charles Davis (just to name a few) were all great in their performances. Of you can't beat Peter Washington on the bass, and Lewis Nash on the drums for keeping the time right. Then there is the Little Big Giant Jimmy Heath that was actually at his best.
