Note - there are two CD sets named 'Ella and Satchmo together', with very different contents. This review deals specifically with the 2007 Blue Moon release, with a largely black cover and a picture of Louis embracing Ella on the left hand side. This review is NOT for the 2 CD Verve release (with a blue cover) of the same name, even though Amazon have automatically posted it on that product's page as well as the intended location.

Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald were two of the most prolific, famous and influential jazz artists of the twentieth century. And every now and then they recorded together to produce some of the most sublime music ever put on record. Both were superb artists by themselves, but together something magical would happen and things would be lifted to another level.

Their most famous recordings were for the Verve label in the late `50s (The Complete Ella And Louis On Verve). The tracks presented here were made in the late `40s and early `50s, and are a foretaste of the great things to come.

However, only 8 of these tracks feature both Ella AND Satch:-

You won't be satisfied
Frim Fram Sauce
Dream a little dream of me
Can anyone explain?
Necessary evil
Oops!
Would you like to take a walk
Who walks in when I walk out?

The rest feature only Ella OR Satch. However, as far as I can tell this is the only place to get all their non Verve duets in one place, so it's pretty good really. And both artists were superb in their own right, so the 12 solo tracks are high quality listening.

The sound quality is good, and the remastering sympathetic. There is a short booklet with detailed personnel notes for each track, a brief essay and some photos.

All in all 4 stars - a good album, but be warned, not all the tracks are Ella/Satch duets.

Format:Audio CD
This 2CD set comprises sessions by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong with the substantial bonus that most are with Oscar Peterson, providing perfect continuity. The 2 complete albums here are "Ella and Louis" (1956) and "Ella and Louis Again" (1957)both of which were very successful in their day and have over the years become very sought after recordings.

The set also offers bonus songs from other sessions CD1:Ella Fitzgerald And Louis Armstrong With Bob Haggart's Orchestra, January 18, 1946, New York, NY plus Louis Armstrong With Ella Fitzgerald And Sy Oliver's Orchestra, August 25, 1950, New York, NY plus Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, July 23, 1957, Los Angeles, CA and Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald with Russell Garcia and Orchestra, August 18-19, 1957, Los Angeles, CA. CD2: Louis Armstrong Meets Oscar Peterson, July 31, 1957, Los Angeles, CA.

The sound quality is excellent and to be able to have these 32 legendary performances in one set is a great addition to the shelves. The liner notes are by Peter Gamble and the compilation was produced by Glenn Gretlund. The total running time for the set is approx 145 minutes. This is a must have set and if it is a first hearing you will be knocked out by all 32 songs!
