Pet Shop Boys celebrated their 25th year together by releasing their third greatest hits collection, "Ultimate." As they did on their two previous collections, they also included at least one new song - in this case the dance stomper "Together." As a single, "Together" has been released in two formats, this CD and a second CD set that includes remixes and two new songs. This CD includes the radio edit of "Together" and a new remix of their breakthrough hit, 1986's "West End Girls."
"Together" is a good song, arguably one of Pet Shop Boy's more commercial-sounding recent singles. The structure of the song is pretty simple, with Neil singing "together" followed by a declaration or promise of closeness - "Together...we'll go all the way." For a duo celebrating their 25th anniversary, the lyrics are quite appropos. I have also read elsewhere that the lyrics may be about a young teen couple deciding to have sex for the first time, and a few people have even claimed that the song is about a suicide pact. Regardless, the lyrics could apply to any close relationship, and I like the idea that Neil and Chris wrote it about themselves. The song is pure dance pop and fits in nicely with their recent music. As single, unfortunately, "Together" underperformed, peaking at #58 in the UK (their first single to miss the Top 40). I'm not sure why it missed so badly. Of course, PSB have not received much airplay in the UK in recent years, so they have has to rely on their core group of fans, but that's usually been enough to place their singles in or near the Top 20.
The remix of "West End Girls" by hot new U.K. electronic artist, Grum, is nothing short of extraordinary. Over the years, PSB have released numerous remixes of their best known hit and only US #1 single, and I frankly wasn't very excited to see that it was the only other song offered on this CD. However, the remix is a huge revelation. It manages to be faithful to the original hit single but manages to sound current and club ready. The remix is slinkier than the original song, making it dangerous and sexy. It has quickly become my favorite remix of "West End Girls" and one of the best PSB remixes I've heard in many years. This song alone makes this CD worth the price.
