Product Description

* The Two Things In One are a band that should have been huge. The precociously-talented, soulful quintet were popular in the early 70s in their native San Francisco Bay Area with three local hits in the singles `Silly Song', `Together Forever' and `Over Dose', all sought-after vinyl items today.

* With an average age of just sixteen at the time of these recordings, all made for the legendary Music City label, this self-contained unit blended Stevie Wonder-like vocal chops and Meters/JB grooves with a rare ability for transforming unlikely covers such as the Allman Brothers' `Dreams' and Crosby Stills Nash and Young's `Ohio' into deeply funky workouts. During their time together, the Two Things In One recorded more than an album's worth of superb, mostly original material, all of which can now be heard on "Together Forever".

* Members later played with Tower Of Power, Sly & The Family Stone and other notables, and the Two Things In One story is a fascinating run-down of what could have been.

* Produced in full co-operation with the band, "Together Forever" gives full acknowledgement to a remarkably talented combo.

The Two Things In One ain't really a household name but they oughtta be. This Californian r'n'b/soul combo were a blend of Sly Stone and early Isley Brothers, with a bit of psychedelic guitar thrown into the mix. Groovy Stuff - these guys sound cool!

1970s Soul-Funk band with Rock Influences 8 Mar. 2014
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This is a very impressive compilation of early 1970s recordings by an obscure American band reissued by Ace Records in the UK. Two Things in One chose their name because they fused jazz with funk, but they also added a guitar player, Michael Griggs, whose influences ran from funk to rock guitarists such as Spirit's Randy California and Steve Howe from Yes.

The band cites Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown, the Meters, War, and Stevie Wonder as influences. This fusion of styles produced some pretty cool music, all of which was recorded from 1971-1973. Along with Griggs' rock flourishes on guitar, another highlight of the band was the keyboard work of Kevin Burton. His funky organ playing echoed that of his own influences such as Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff. The best cuts on this compilation of songs by Two Things in One are the extended jams that highlight both Burton's organ skills and Griggs' guitar prowess. These guys were very young --- in their late teens --- when they recorded this stuff, but they sound like seasoned pros.

This compilation shows the band doing some very creative covers ("Dreams" by the Allman Brothers" and "Cantaloupe Island" by Herbie Hancock are turned into long jams, plus they do Neil Young's "Ohio", Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made to Love Her," and a version of "Walk on By") along with some impressive original material too. These young musicians had plenty of talent, but chart success was elusive. Another unfortunate case of label and distribution problems dooming a talented young band.

After disappointing sales and legal problems with their label, the band called it quits in 1975, but that was not the end of the music career for these guys. Some of the members formed the band Skye, and then lead singer Michael Jeffries joined Tower of Power for several years. Meanwhile Burton became a member of Frankie Beverly and Maze.

This CD comes with a 24-page booklet that includes an entertaining and informative interview with the band members. The discovery of these "long lost" Music City recordings have apparently inspired the original 5 members to reunite. It would certainly be a treat to hear some new recordings by these guys. This CD is highly recommended for fans of creative soul and funk music from the early 1970s.
