I first remember hearing the wondrous "together we are beautiful" on a school trip to Twycross Zoo when I was no where near my teens. From that moment, I fell in love with the song and with Fern Kinney. All these years have passed and I have probably fallen in love with a thousand songs and quite a few hundred pretty girls too. But when Fern Kinney "walked into my life" she stayed there for ever with this song.

Don't ask me why, but I loved Fern Kinney's voice from the moment I first heard "Together we are beautiful". Derided at the time by the populist masses, I thought it was a wonderful slice of sultry Southern soul by the lady from Jackson, Mississippi, so checked out the LP. I loved it and subsequently bought all three of Fern's LP's before she sadly faded from view on account of failing to reach the required album sales.

Until now her second album, simply entitled "Fern", has never been totally available on CD. I found a collection in Japan some years ago on my travels that had on it the sublime "I've been lonely for so long" as well as one or two other gems from the album, but I could never make up the entire album set in CD quality sound, until now.

This is by no means a perfect collection - there is one omission I would have dearly loved on CD and that's her duet with Frederick Knight, "Sweet life". Also missing is the B side of her "Groove me" 12" single "Let's keep it right there". Mind you, I was never a fan of that song, so I don't mind so much. I'm just a bit of a purist! Nevertheless, there is one song on here that I did not know existed "In paradise" and another that to my knowledge has never been on CD anywhere, "Movie Show". Both songs sound wonderful and the latter is even in an extended form that I had never heard before. For that, I can forgive the compiler anything.

So sit back, kick off your shoes, snuggle up to your loved one and immerse yourselves in the sweet soul sounds of some real Southern Comfort. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Miss Fern Kinney.

To tell you the truth I hadn't really heard of this lady before the UK Deodorant advert of a few years ago. The song "Together we are Beautiful" was the one used in the commercial where a midget Tony Adams (Ex-Gooners footballer) and another man fall for each other whilst spraying their arm pits. Remember?

Anyway the price of this CD is worth the money for that alone. Fern Kinney has this wonderful girlish 'kittenesque' voice about her. She is like a discofied Stina Nordenstam (If you've heard of her) or Donna Summer on speed. This would not be my usual CD sound of choice but this really does shine.

The line of the title track "I've been with better looking guys, you've been with prettier looking birds" brings a smile to my face. When I call a girl a bird I usually get a slap on the chops!!!

If Fern herself is reading this, Thank you. X
