Toddler Talk follows on from Babbling Babies and has been developed by ICAN, the charity that supports children with speech, language and communication difficulties. They recognise that the skills learnt in these early years affect behaviour and success in school and in later life. Toddler Talk is a collection of 36 wipeable communication cards each measuring 21cm x15cm and aimed at children from 18 months to 3 years. The cards are stored in a sturdy presentation box and are colour coded and named into the following 6 groups each with a developmental theme:
Yellow: "Chatterbox the Canary" -Understanding what is said.
Red: "Mischievous the Monkey"- Talking socially- eye contact.
Green: "Big Ears the Elephant" - Listening to sounds.
Green: "Big Ears the Elephant" - Listening to words.
Blue: "Brilliant the Butterfly" - Listening and using new words.
Brown: Brave the Bear"- Building sentences.
Each Card is beautifully illustrated on the front and on the reverse is where the learning starts. Each card is divided into "What you need" and "How you play" The activities are structured using fun ideas that both parents and practitioners can use with toddlers either individually or in a group setting. Being both an experienced practitioner and mother I was delighted to pick up some exciting new ways to communicate with toddlers. Many of the activities can be used throughout the day and others will require about 30 minutes set aside.
These cards would be invaluable to a structured group setting and a suggested timetable covering a six week period is included. I feel this is a wonderful resource for early years practitioners working with children with a delay in communication and for parents who recognise the benefits of language development for their toddlers

Toddler Talk 3 Jan 2011
A fantastic and up to date resource perfect for parents, practioners and speech and language therapists. The lovely illustrated cards are packed with simple and practical ideas to develop a child's important communication skills. Each card focuses on key areas to develop children's communication, including ideas for attention & listening skills, play, understanding and using words and sentences, and developing the vital skills of social use of language.

For practioners and speech and language therapists is provides a set of cards for ideas for individual and group working, and also has a 6 week sample program to develop communication.

A fun very well set out set of cards and simple manual that can be used by anyone.....great!

Toddler Talk is a set of activities, clearly explained on beautifully illustrated individual cards. The activities are designed to be done between parent and toddler, or practitioner and toddler. The clear instructions are excellent and the accompanying booklet is useful for explaining the benefits to child development for each area. The suggested programme of activities at the back of the booklet is a great idea.
My only 'However' is that it would be useful to have the reason for the game on each card, so it's obvious to parents and practitioners what the child is gaining from doing this.
Overall, a well thought out and beautifully presented resource.
