This was the second TR album I ever bought ,back in 1975....

After looking back at all the Utopia albums i think this line up were the best and most creative.

Still listen to it today and yes I may be a BOF but it stands up to any of the prog rock genre that's being produced today.

Lets face it, Todd Rundren is the architypal self-indulgant!
A most prolific musical creator, with the shortest attention-span in rock. Here he demonstates what a short attention-span (and three virtuoso keyboard players) can throw up. But don't let that put you off - this is definitely a ROCK record.
Recorded partly live, Todd Rundgren's Utopia is my favourite Todd Album, partly for it's consistancy (rare for Todd), but mostly for it's success in the face of experimentation. Come on, it's 1974, you've got Yes, King Crimson, Genesis and a whole load of other (mostly brit) prog-rockers doing nine-minute epics about ghools, goblins, goocks and geeks! So, from Pensalvaynia, Todd has a go, combines it with some great lyrics and comes up with this! Prog with Soul!! Hmm.
Prog's biggest criticism is that the songs just went on too long, but it's hard to accuse Todd of that here. Even though The Icon takes up a whole side of the vinyl, you could drop the needle in anywhere in the track and just want to be dragged along to the end.
Lord knows where half of the musos from this album are today (John Seigler worked with Hall & Oats for a bit and Moogie Kingman came and went through Todd's touring band over the years) but they all layed down this real heavy-prog hybrid that happened years before Rush got the idea.
And here's the twist: this is a wonderful example of the work Todd was doing at the time - A Wizard, Todd etc, but played with a full band - so it's just got load of soul.
Just one question remains: M Frog Labatt, where are you now!!

This was my first Todd album back in the seventies. I had heard something increadible on the radio by Todd Rundgren's Utopia and saved up to buy the LP.
Fans of Todd Rundgren will find something different here from his usual fare. Teaming up with some interesting characters, he has created a special musical treat. The two albums he released as "Todd Rundgren's Utopia" ("Another Live" being the other) show a penchant for sophisticated prog rock. But being Todd, he somehow manages to do this better than anyone else. Listening to it in this day and age it still sounds fabulous.
It may not appeal to every fan of albums like "Something / Anything" (this is very different) but any real Todd fan (you know who you are) will love it.
If you have not heard this before, deprive yourself no longer. It's one of the best things your likely to hear.

A 4 track CD that should be in every rock-music lovers collection.
Utopia are music-smiths par exellance and praise for this album cannot be too high.
Todd was usually generous with time on vinyl LPs and this helps with translation onto CD. The original LP was nearly an hour long. So no lame bonus tracks were needed on the CD.
This CD is lyrically hard hitting and the band is tight and professional throughout. Get it!
