4.0 out of 5 stars Well-crafted men on a mission movie 28 Nov 2008
By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER
Tobruk is a superior men-on-a-mission movie with lavish production values and a good set-up even if it has little resemblance to history (there was a Second World War and the Nazis were the bad guys, but that's probably about the only thing you won't need to take with a pinch of salt), with Canuck Rock Hudson sprung from a Vichy French prison ship in Algiers by George Peppard's German Jews fighting for the Allies. Seems he's the only one who can guide them on a raid on the German fuel dumps at Tobruk along with a raiding party disguised as Afrika Corps troops transporting British prisoners of war led by Nigel Green's casually anti-Semitic British colonel. Neither the British nor the Jews particularly trust each other because of that nasty business in Palestine, with Hudson pretty much taking the William Holden role from Bridge on the River Kwai here as a reluctant buffer between them while at a remove from their obsessions. Naturally, there's a traitor in their midst and enemy patrols, minefields and their own airplanes to be avoided, with a Nazi-sympathising Irish spy and his daughter thrown in to complicate matters further and add a bit of half-hearted female interest amid all the testosterone.

Obligatory war movie regulars Norman Rossington, Percy Herbert and Jack Watson are present and correct in the ranks (Sam Kydd and Gordon Jackson were presumably busy that month on another war movie) and there's a memorable score by Bronislau Kaper. It's impressively directed by Arthur Hiller with a well-crafted script by Leo V. Gordon that keeps things moving and throws in the odd good spin on some of the clichés en route to a finale that should please all lovers of very big explosions, while Russell Harlan's Techniscope cinematography looks good in the 2.35:1 widescreen German DVD, which offers an English soundtrack with removeable subtitles and the original theatrical trailer.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cracking war film 3 April 2003
Format:VHS Tape
To my mind, this is an under-rated should be classic war film. The plot is fairly simple; a group of allied commandos disguised as POWs attempt to infiltrate the German lines in North Africa in an effort to destroy the German fuel bunkers at Tobruk. These fuel reserves are vital to the tanks of the German war machine and the allied command has assembled a crack team of soldiers to pull off the job. The cast features a number of stars; Rock Hudson plays a Canadian Officer with vast experience of desert warfare conditions, Nigel Green plays the Colonel who has put the mission together and George Peppard plays a German Jew working for the British who, along with his fellow jews, take the role of German guards escorting the POWs back to Tobruk. The interaction between these characters is laced with mutual mis-trust which adds an extra edge to the film; especially when a traitor puts the mission at risk. The film features several action-packed battle scenes before reaching its climax at the port of Tobruk. This copy is only let down by poor editing; the original widescreen version featured subtitles for the German dialogue which has been lost in the cutdown picture and one or two scenes (especially the last) loose some of their impact where they have been shortened.
In summary, if you like war films then this is one for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favourite war movies. 9 Jun 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Its one of those movies where you will recognise alot of the faces and not be able to put names to them,ie,Norman Rossington and Percy Herbet, not to mention a few more, like Guy Stockwell who has a very famous acting brother? Also more you will know. For me the pairing of Rossington and Herbert make the film with their light hearted banter, but Nigel Green is always watchable with life cut so short in his prime.Im not going to go into the plot but there are a couple of surprises and especially a sad twist of fate at the end,but this doesnt give any plot away?Crackin film, shame it has to finish.Great transfer to dvd and even if yer not a war film fan, this will grab yer.Rock is,well, just Rock as usual, but is surrounded by great actors.Im thrilled its now available.ENJOY.

Tobruk - Rock Hudson [DVD] [1967]
Decent war movie! If you have seen Raid On Rommel starring Richard Burton, you will notice a very similar story & some of the same film footage is used in both films! But I enjoyed both films! There not the best movies ever! But they do have some kind of magic that you end up enjoying them. Well I did! :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Action and Suspense in the Desert! 29 April 2014
It you are into historical accuracy then you had better give this one a wide berth. Set during the North African Campaign in World War Two, it is pure escapist boys own adventure stuff, although not quite as extreme as the enjoyable "Where Eagles Dare"(68). We still await the definitive film about the siege of Tobruk! The films plot is very similar to the dire "Raid on Rommel"(71), which may have borrowed from it, as it did some of the battle stock footage. That film was akin to watching a live web cam of a hibernating tortoise, but thankfully this one is much better.

Rock Hudson is a Canadian Major, a good plot device to include a Hollywood star with some American market clout, whose vital knowledge of the Saharan topography and conditions is vital to the success of a daring behind lines raid on the fuel bunkers of Field Marshall Erwin Rommel's Panzer Army Africa in Tobruk. He joins forces with members of the Long Range Desert Group and the Special Identification Group, made up of German speaking Jews. Their journey across the desert is a perilous one, beset by enemies within and without. Just getting to their target will be a result!

The film is surprisingly character driven for such an all out action film. Relationships between the jews and the British is somewhat frosty with neutral Canadian Rock Hudson playing `piggy in the middle'. The Lieutenant Colonel commanding the LRDG, played by Nigel Green as a very stiff upper lip Hollywood Englishman, who is overtly anti semitic and needs winning over. With more than average character development, some genuine suspense and some very well realised battle sequences, especially the rousing finale, it is enjoyable enough stuff.
