More About the Author

It could be said that Tom Percival had an unconventional childhood in a remote and beautiful part of South Shropshire. But you just as easily rephrase that by saying that he grew up in a ramshackle and freezing-cold caravan with no electricity or heating. Whichever way you look at it, these formative years are almost certainly what first got him interested in writing and drawing.

The first books that Tom ever loved were the Tim and the Hidden People series by Sheila McCullagh, which featured a magical cat called Tobias. It all seemed VERY real at night, in a draughty caravan, reading by gaslight in a howling gale.

After trying a few cities on for size, he decided that deep down he had always been a country boy and now he lives on the edge of Rodborough common in Gloucestershire with his girlfriend and their two young sons.

Tom has produced covers and internal illustrations for the Skulduggery Pleasant series of books as well as for the Chronicles of Egg series by Geoff Rodkey and Shiverton Hall by Emerald Fennell. He has also illustrated titles by Anthony Horowitz, Pete Johnson, Alexadro Adornetto and a whole host of other people.

Tom has three picture books currently available, 'Tobias and the Super Spooky Ghost Book', 'A Home for Mr Tipps' and 'Jack's AMAZING Shadow'.

His next book, 'Herman's Letter' will follow in October 2013 and is published by Bloomsbury.

My 3 yr old nephew loves this book so much I have bought more to give as Christmas presents. Even my 1yr old enjoyed looking at the pictures. Good buy and will hopefully make a fab Halloween gift or stocking filler. I'd definitely recommend it for boys and girls.

Ive always been a fan of Tom Percivals work (I went to University with him), fresh style, fresh thinking and awesome illustrative skills. Im getting my copy of this very soon, even though everyone says Im to young, I dont care, the illustration work is inspirational. Get it well you can, these babies are hot potatoes while they last.

I did prefer 'A Home for Mr Tipps', probably because the more straightforward story suited my three-year-old. He does like this though.

Bored after centuries as a ghost with no friends, Tobias is thrilled to see a family moving into his house. He plans on scaring the little girl, Eliza. But it may not go to plan...

Percival's style of drawing, with occasionally photos combined with bright, stylised pictures is distinctive and brilliant. Very eye-catching.

Some children might find this a little scary - ghosts take their heads off. There are bats and monsters. The ghosts aren't frightening though, and the story takes friendly turns that made my son smile.

I read this great new picture book to my year 3 class and we decided to review it together:
It is a great book for halloween. We all love the character of Tobias and we think Great Uncle Finnegan is very funny. It made us believe in ghosts. We loved the mix of cartoons and real pictures. Our favourite part was the ending BOO! The characters are funny. We are now using it in our Literacy lessons to write a playscript. Well done Tom- Hector reincarnated!!?Looking forward to next summer's book already!

This book is so beautifully illustrate, my 3 and a half year old has been studying every page, looking at every detail and seems to find a new monster or ghost each time. It is beautifully scary, but not so scary as to cause nightmares, sometimes I've had to read it 3 times before bed. Will really feed young imaginations.
