The author is from Mull and knows his island folk. The characters are well-drawn and realistic. Lots of creepy, interesting events happen that are somewhat supernatural, yet there is also the conflicts between urban folk and islanders that bring the stories and situations alive. He writes fiction well for a professor (St. Andrews) - not too academic nor stilted as some researchers tend to write. I've given this book to many people as gifts and it always gets a good response. If you know someone who would love to run away and live on a Scottish island - give them this book.

Excellent collection of short stories ranging from the supernatural to the postcolonial. Brings out the insularity of island life and all the issues inherent in living in the Hebrides such as language, outsiders.
