I got this for my daughter to look at the pages in Search for Santa (Fun for All) book. Some of the things to search for a very small, and this would magnify them so it would be easier to see. Yes, it does magnify the picture by 3x as described and she loves it.
However, the build quality leaves much to be desired. The handle and lens holder is black plastic and the lens is also plastic. This makes it lightweight, but a plastic magnifying lens shows all the deformities in the manufacture. As you look through it, if puts a strain on your eyes as it seems distorted. It just feels weird to look through.
My daughter loves it but I cannot bear it, I will look for a better quality with a glass lens that has less imperfections in it.

I liked this because it's an unexpected toy that allows the child to create the fun by actually using their own brain and imagination.
