There is a lot of plastic here and not much iron. The "horseshoe" and "bar" magnets are nothing of the sort -- they are shaped plastic cases, mostly hollow, with a little magnet at each end. Consequently they are quite week. The ring magnets are also encased in plastic, but at least they contain more iron and less air. My son does enjoy this set (hence I've given it the stars I have), but that is due to his interest in magnets rather than the quality of this item.

This is a good Magnet set - seems durable and includes several different types of magnet to experiment with, along with some instructions about how to do simple experiments.
The set comes with 5 ball bearings and 5 small metal rods - obviously a danger to younger children - and very prone to getting lost (the only negative I could find).
Overall very good.
