Although Toast is one of those ubiquitous app's for me, installed on almost every Mac I've owned, I've been lax recently and haven't updated since version 8 - so version 11 puts a fresh face on an old friend. The interface has been nicely refined and a few functions have been relocated to more logical places. There's a new Assistant which (optionally) pops up when you run Toast and offers tutorial videos or easy access to the main functions - it must be super easy to use because it features REALLY BIG BUTTONS! Although the main user-interface is logical and well laid out it can be a bit sluggish and when you click on the video panel it takes up to 20 seconds to actually appear (I think it's caching all the graphics for making DVD menus) which seems a bit ridiculous, even on my ageing Mac. I've stumbled over a couple of minor bugs but these seem to be on Roxio's radar and are getting fixed with updates - two updates since I installed the disc version a month ago.

Roxio have taken a couple of their earlier disc-burning app's -- Jam (for mastering audio CD's) and Popcorn (for making video DVD's) -- and rolled their functionality into Toast. Some of these features have been further enhanced in version 11 - for example Jam's crossfade effects, used to add DJ-style segues between tracks on audio CD's, are now supplemented by the ability to add AU (Audio Unit) effects on a track by track basis too - this includes the Bias SoundSoap plugin that ships with Toast, so you can clean up any pops or scratches on vinyl transfers as you burn them to disc. Speaking of analogue transfers, that's about the only thing missing from Toast Titanium package - a driver to allow you to use an analogue video/audio capture box. Roxio offer their own Easy VHS to DVD device of course so maybe it's unfair to expect them to support other people's hardware.

Naturally this 'Pro' version of Toast is only really worthwhile if you actually use the bundled app's it comes with - but even if you only wanted the excellent Adobe Elements it's a pretty good deal. Toast itself (just when are they going to drop the meaningless and out-dated 'Titanium' monicker?) remains the most comprehensive and easy-to-use app for creating optical media around, I've yet to find anything else to really compete with it in terms of easy-functionality.

I haven't written a review on Amazon before but felt compelled to for Toast 11 Titanium Pro because all the features I bought it for do not work (version 11.0.2 at the time of writing).

The main reason I bought Toast 11 Titanium Pro was to write files from my camcorder to DVD in AVCHD format for playback on a blu-ray player. This is well-publicised selling point of the more expensive Pro version and is expressly referred to in a heading on Amazon's product page. Yet the burn process gets stuck at 99% every time and DVDs are not usable. And the problem doesn't affect only me - take a look on Roxio forums where hundreds of others have posted about this. One apparent fix is to turn off buffer underrun protection, but this only helps for projects shorter than about 5 minutes. Don't know about you, but I tend to record more than 5 minutes of video when I go on holiday! If anyone has a better fix for this problem, or if AVCHD burns work for them, please do comment or post a separate review. Version 11.0.3 is described as addressing this flaw but at the time of writing a beta build of this new version is reported to suffer exactly the same issue.

And the problems do not stop there. Some of the most basic features cause Toast to crash: copying DVDs and writing DVDs among them. If I was using some exotic hardware, I might have some sympathy for these issues, but I'm not - I have a 2010 Macbook Pro.

For me, it is mpossible to recommend this software in its current form. Either buy Toast 10 or wait until Toast 11 is fixed. Without doubt the most unusable piece of software I've used since Frontier on the Amiga in 1993!

If you use a Mac, you probably need Toast, whether you know it or not. Backing up onto CD or DVD, as we should do in addition to hard drives, is made easy... burning home videos to DVD or Blu Ray is a doddle, better than iMovie; even creating MP3 mix tapes is easier than using iTunes. The latest edition of the software even includes comprehensive video encoding, so you can convert files for playback on your TV, or convert home videos for your iPad, iPod, Apple TV, etc. There's clean-up options and crossfade for audio CDs, and this package even includes bundled software, such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, making it even more worthwhile for the price. Overall, an essential purchase!
