Product Description

Feature-length BBC comedy drama based on the memoirs of food writer and broadcaster Nigel Slater. In 1950s Wolverhampton, nine-year-old Nigel (Freddie Highmore) is left with his distant father (Ken Stott) and new housekeeper Joan Potter (Helena Bonham Carter) after the death of his adored mother (Victoria Hamilton). Unlike his mother, whose greatest culinary achievement was toast, Joan is an excellent cook, and Nigel is soon competing with her for his father's affections by trying to outshine her in the kitchen.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 5.1 ), English ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (2.35:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Wolverhampton, 1967: nine year old Nigel Slater loves his mother though she is a hopeless cook, her finest offering being toast whilst he has great culinary aspirations. When she dies of asthma Nigel is left with a distant father but worse is to come when the 'common' Mrs. Joan Potter arrives as the Slaters' cleaner. Nigel fears, rightly, that her aim is to be the next Mrs. Slater and soon he has a new stepmother and is whisked away to the country. Joan is, however, a superb cook but this only makes for rivalry as Nigel, the only boy in his cookery class at secondary school, competes with her to find the way to his father's heart. A weekend job in a pub kitchen introduces Nigel to an older boy, another great cook and gay like himself, who gives him the confidence and inspiration to leave home after his father's death and head for the hotel kitchens of London. ...Toast

A beautiful piece of film indugence. From its warm, retro soundtrack, supplied courtesy of Dusty Springfield's songbook, to its technicolour perfection, this is a beautiful, lovingly shot adaptation of Nigel Slater's early years.
The casting is spot-on, and the whole has an intelligent feel to it. Without giving the game away, there is some very clever camera imagery at work when Mrs Potter is busy scrubbing, hoovering and polishing her way into the Slater household.
Feel-good viewing, with some heart-wretching moments (but then, that's life, isn't it?), the whole has a the feel of one of those perfect summer days from long ago - with a lemon meringue pie cooling in the kitchen, of course! Watch, and allow yourself to be indulged.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making Plans for Nigel 28 May 2011
Format:DVD
At first i wasn't sure about this film as i only ever knew a little of the writer and cook Nigel Slater from what i had seen on the T.V. I was hooked! What an amazing film it is and so honest and openly written that i bought the DVD as soon as it was available! Wonderful storylines, wonderful acting and a lovely suprise at the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the book 4 April 2011
By CMIL
Format:DVD
Take my advice, dont bother with this, just read the book. The best and most humorous bits of the book dont make it into the screen adaptation (probably too risque) and the story just doesnt come alive on screen as much though if you havent read the book first this would be entertaining and bonham carter is her typical self in it which is a joy to watch. Children of that era will find interest in the props too. If you have to do both then do this first and then the book as at least then you are heading in the right direction!

A well-made film with humour and a nice sense of period. It has good performances from the cast particualrly the two juveniles who play Nigel Slater.
