Review

A delightful new book which captures the essence of the countryside with wit and wry observation. This is no smart aleck view as purveyed by many louder-than-life Yanks who think the M1 is a cart track. This is a gentle and affectionate look at our lifestyle as only an outsider can perceive it. --Rutland & Stamford Mercury

It is an entertaining volume...when making fun of either customs or people, she does so with gentle humour and without malice, and often displays the endearing characteristic of being able to laugh at herself. --Leicestershire and Rutland Life

Enchanting accounts of living in Tuscany or the south of France have set such a high standard that this tale of an American moving from London to the countryside has stiff competition. American-born author Leslie Ann Bosher and her British-born husband buy a spacious apartment in a 17th century manor house and become acquainted with the rustic joys of winter weather, market days, country fashions and the village pub. It may not be the sun-drenched landscape of Provence or the ancient walled town of Montalcino but life in the English countryside seen, despite her duel nationality, through American eyes is entertaining reading. --Sydney Newspaper, The Mosmon Daily

Product Description

Be prepared to laugh out loud at the foibles of humankind as Leslie Ann Bosher exchanges her treasured city life for unremitting open space in this wryly written story of a naturalised Brit who decides to make room for a pair of Wellington boots beside her stilettos.

When American-born London resident Leslie Ann Bosher pictured her future, she thought that a little weekend hideaway in Paris would be on the cards. So she was rather taken aback when her husband, Bill, showed her a brochure on a Stocken Hall. Join Leslie Ann as she takes us on a humour-filled journey to English country living: from the joys and quirks of a small town and the people who reside in it, to the wonderful differences between the British and American approaches to life.

Laughing Out Loud 26 Sep 2007
Format:Paperback
I loved this witty, memoir, which could have been titled To The Manor Drawn - and Quartered. I found myself laughing out loud at the author's razor sharp wit and spot on description of what we imagine the English countryside offers an American big city girl. I recommend this book.

Leslie Ann Bosher's book about moving from London to the English countryside is a striking first effort that makes you feel like you are there. Born and raised in the US Ms Bosher pokes fun at US and English customs alike. Even the French aren't safe from her rapier wit! I particularly loved her description of the sidewalks of Paris and her struggles with mastering the language - Ooh La La!

Fast-paced, witty and charming with phraseology that elevates the reader's status from voyeur to participant, for everyone who's ever dreamed of living abroad, "To The Manor Drawn" is a must-read.

Unlike the comedic episodes or travelogues written by other expatriates, Bosher's style breathes reality, intimacy and a sense of history into her shared journey. I couldn't put it down and highly recommend "To The Manor Drawn".
