Book Description

3 Mar 2010
Lord Richard Harcourt has devised a master plan for ridding himself of debt. The notorious rake will abduct a wealthy heiress. But beneath her meek, prim exterior, Richard discovers a shrewd and exciting temptress he can't resist touching...After a night alone in a coach with her captor, Bethany Dallison knows she must wed him if she wishes to keep her reputation intact. Though she cannot control her fate, Bethany can control her impulses. She refuses to yield her body to Richard - no matter how seductive his kisses. But as their nuptials approach, Bethany finds her resolve quickly melting under his caress - while Richard finds that fortune is the last thing on his mind...A lover of historical romance since picking up her first Georgette Heyer novel at the age of 10, Ann Stephens lives in the Midwest with her husband, two beautiful daughters and two cats. She learned the value of a good story and great characters while earning her theatre degree. History fascinates her, and she enjoys researching her stories almost as much as writing them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Middling 22 Jun 2010
By Helen Hancox TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The last two books I have read have both had similarities; both take the idea of a titled man having to marry a fortune and of the marriage of convenience turning into a love match; both are historical romances in worlds of horses and carriages, large family estates and more; however, only one of these books was a good read - and unfortunately it wasn't this one.

'To be seduced' wasn't a bad book, just middling. It suffered from a bit of a lack of direction in its feel, with events trundling along and the characters never really coming fully to life. It also had a distinct whiff of modernity about the characters, particularly our heroine Bethany Dallison, who despite living in the 1660s seems to have remarkably modern ideas at times.

When Bethany is kidnapped by her neighbour Lord Richard Harcourt who's crushed by debt, she knows she'll have to marry him to save her reputation. He only wants her because she's an heiress, of course, but she sees the opportunity to gain a small amount of control over her own fortune - and takes the chance.

In order for the book to work it needs a baddie (who comes in rather suddenly and whose motives seem distinctly unconvincing) and a Big Misunderstanding and all the normal aspects of books like this, and it has them. However it somehow didn't quite tie together. I didn't feel that I believed in the romance - neither hero nor heroine was particularly nice to the other - and I couldn't believe in the jeopardy of Richard at the end of the book, nor that his wife would be able to sway the people before whom she spoke (which surely wouldn't be allowed anyway). There are lots of books like this and I found that this one, unlike the other on this theme that I read which I thought was excellent, was sadly just middling.

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable jocular seventeenth century romance 19 Feb 2010
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In 1661 Lord Richard Harcourt fears he will drown in his overwhelming debts. His plan is simple. Richard will abduct and force a biddable heiress to marry him.

Wealthy Bethany Dallison needs to find an escape from her pending marriage of doom to odious Mr. Ilkston. She believes Lord Richard has provided it when he kidnaps her. Knowing she must marry her abductor to save her reputation, she accepts his proposal. As the pastor reads the weddings vows to Bethany and Richard, she explains the rules of their marriage especially her money. Stunned by her brazen remarks but also admiring her courage, Richard thinks he cans educe his wife to do what he desires as she is an innocent and he a veteran rake. The gender was has begun one touch and kiss at a time.

To Be Seduced is an enjoyable jocular seventeenth century romance starring two obstinate strong lead characters who each believes is taming the shrew. Although the political squabble between Parliament and King Charles II crowned that year never comes across as disruptively meaningful (even with Richard caught between the fighting factions), fans will appreciate the war of the Harcourts wondering who will be on top.

4.0 out of 5 stars Restoration romance 25 Dec 2011
By avid reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is one of the few romances I have read that is set in the early restoration period. This may be a little confusing for those who read predominantly regency romances but the author does a pretty good job of explaining the era without getting bogged down by historical details. I enjoyed the feisty heroine but the romance wasn't the author's best work-- "Her Scottish Groom" is better.
5.0 out of 5 stars To Be Seduced 26 April 2011

Lord Richard Harcourt desperately needs money to get himself out of debt. His plan is to kidnap and marry heiress Bethany Dallison. Bethany uses her abduction as a way to gain her freedom from a loveless marriage to another man as well as access to her own fortune. Falling in love might ruin both of their plans, though.

To Be Seduced is a classic historical romance where setting and circumstance enable a seductive kidnapping. Richard and Bethany's stubborn pride often mixes with jealousy and misunderstandings, which throw obstacles in the way (of what is obvious to everyone but them), an undeniable romance. They share great passion and affection for each other but are too prideful to see it until it's almost too late. They repeatedly hurt each other, especially Richard to Bethany, because they are cut from the same distrustful cloth. To Be Seduced has a fair share of angst, but there's something special about Richard and Bethany that kept me cheering for them throughout their tumultuous love story.
