About the Author
Joseph M. Marshall III was born on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota and raised by his maternal grandparents. He is an historian, educator, motivational speaker and Lakota craftsman; he has worked as both technical advisor and actor in television movies, including Return to Lonesome Dove. His most recent role was playing Loved by Buffalo in the Turner Network Television miniseries Into the West. A recipient of the Wyoming Humanities Award, he is author of numerous collections of essays and short stories.

more important now than ever

Giving voice to a Native American view of the world is important as we witness the effects of disregarding our connection with the natural world. Marshall reminds us that we live as part of the Earth and that we can gain great wisdom from observing and respecting her cycles. He shares stories from his Native upbringing that convey an alternative to our contemporary consumer worldview.
