To the 5 Boroughs, the Beastie Boys' first LP in six years, is a thunderous return to form. Dispensing with the electro experimentation of the more challenging Hello Nasty, the boys get back to basics, seeming to sense that the time is exactly right to launch the return of their old-skool sound. Lead single "Ch-Check It Out" blows open the doors, with its booming meaty beats and funky vibes, reminding us just how exciting the rap-rock genre was back in the day when these guys helped pioneer it, before all the whiney "Limp Linkins" came along and commodified it.

To the 5 Boroughs captures the sound of the Beasties in their prime, spitting invective (as on the Bush-baiting "That's It That's All") over urgent bass-driven cuts with fortysomething voices that are as fresh as ever. They may be less concerned now with the Party than with a picnic ("grilled cheese", "flapjacks", "matzoh", "cholla", "falafel", "gorgonzola", "spaghetti" and "chicken tikka" all get a shout), but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. With age has come Buddhist-influenced wisdom, and gone are the misogynistic tendencies of old; these days they're more likely to be rapping about "the beach" rather than a bitch. Though these Beasties bring a message of love ("we gotta keep the party goin' on; all lifestyles sizes, shapes and forms") they're tighter and truer than ever. --Paul Eisinger

If you're considering buying this, just stop. BUY IT! It's simply amazing. The Beastie Boys still sound fresher than a moist towelette. Every single rap group that has tried to recreate their distinctive freshness and pure NY spirit of hip-hop has FAILED and you realise this when you listen to this new album. Mix Master Mike is a genius on the turntables, and he has been given much more creative freedom on this record. Hello Nasty seems almost a diversion compared to this album. Musically it is more in line with Ill Communication and Check Your Head, and this is a good thing if you like those records. There is so much spirit in this album, and you can really feel the Beastie Boys just being their best. Simply awesome.

Probably the album i've most anticipated in as long as i can remember. But, yay The wait is over! But sadly i really don't think its been worth the wait or anticipation. Its not that it is a bad album, cuz it ain't, its just that it don't have that edge that all other B-Boy albums did. I've tried and i've tried to get into it, listening to it countless times since i got it. But it still manages to be forgettable and altogether not that interesting or fun at all. Maybe i'm missing something cuz a lot of people seem to love it to bits and i have a friend who rates it over 'Licensed to Ill' and 'Pauls Boutique', which i personally can't even begin to understand.

Another flaw i i think is the 'Over Political' lyrics. I got no probs with Politics in music, but most of this seems forced and in one ear out the other messages. Ad-Rock eaily pulls it off the best, with his smooth flowing rhymes, not to say Mike n Adam have lost it tho.

Now for a positive side! ;) The beasties have come along and produced another album that sounds nothing like anything else they've done. Barre 'Ill Communication' n 'Check Your Head' it seems to be something they are good at. I think this whole album is all processed sounds, which is an interesting step, they just don't pull it off too good. Worth a shot tho i guess.

Its my least fav B-Boy album, i'd prob even put on 'The In-Sound From Way Out' before i put this on. But Hey don't take my word for it, buy it, DL it, whatever, see what ya think. If you are new to the beasties, check 'Pauls Boutique' out first cuz buying 'TT5B' could fool you into thinking they are less good than they actually are.

The first single "Check it out", really doesn't give an indication of the direction of this album, which on the whole has a much more focused, stripped down and new (old) school feel to it. You can surly feel the mixmaster mike influence, which only lends itself to the overall more intense feel found here. No laid back lounge music or punk, and a definitly more political slant to the lyrics sees the beasties step up to the plate and deliver, but in a much more refreshing way than I was expecting.
